For you newbies: wait until you get a whiff of this place in the next few months. |

The good news is you can pretty easily join in with various clean-up campaigns if the rubbish everywhere bothers you.
You can contact your local government office or environmental groups if you want to help out. Or it's as simple as taking a couple of empty plastic bags with you whenever you go hiking. |

So where does all the trash and rubbish go? Buried beneath Jamsil Stadium, Suwon World Cup Stadium perhaps? |

There is a river right along the apartment complex I live in. I just came from a walk there...I bring a plastic bag everytime, but it fills up in seconds.
Anyhow, would love to get my hands on some garbage tongs and a few big ole bags...anyone know how? Site available? Whats the deal?
oh yeah, today i had some left over bread and thought I would give it to the ducks...OMG! I threw the bread in the water, ducks took off the other direction so fast it was mind boggling. At home they would be all over it! I guess they are not used to human generosity. That was not a shot at Korea, it was just a fact. I have never, never seen a local feed the ducks on the river. Oh well..

So I'm wondering if Immigration is going to bust me for joining the garbathon in a voluntary capacity. |

I'm not too sure at all. I've just contacted city hall in Yeosu about doing some big coastal clean-ups but they have yet to get back to me. If you do get the local government's interest however I am sure they will provide some material report.
Next time I go out though I am planning to take some of the local official rubbish bags rather than just empty shopping bags. That way the authorities will be more likely to take the rubbish away.
You are in Daegu I assume. I'll try to find some information for you. |

If the ducks had eaten it, animal "rights" activists might have signed their death warrants for mixing with us foul humans.
Because it's unnatural! |

If you have had rocks thrown at you or been fed random garbage day in day out would you fly towards a creature that is throwing something towards you?
I have seen these toy-robot arm things at some toy stores and I they were at the 100yen stores while I was in Japan but yet to find them here... If I could speak Korean I would ask one of the women that volunteer to clean up what all of the other people toss... |

Guys don't pay attention to the mental case. I've been told that she was actively seeking psychiatric help, maybe her doctor will prescribe something really strong so we don't have to endure her insanity too much longer.
There's a really simple way to fix the trash problem in Korea. Charge every home owner and renter a fee for garbage. Put receptacles out on the streets and pick up the trash once every few days. What's so hard about that? People are going to pay for the trash bags anyway, so what's another 30,000 won per month for the trash fees?
And as far as the city workers not doing their jobs, TV stations and newspapers could run a month long story on how they're not doing their job - maybe actually get some of them to work for a change. But no, we have the Korea Herald and their "staff writers" like bramble (PM me for links) who write stupid articles about how they saved two cats named "Peenie and Geenie" from the cruel streets of Korea, or vegetarian dinners...real nice!
Why is it that the Japanese have their workers clean up trash off the streets daily but the Koreans won't? Korea isn't poor, all they have to do is provide the public with trash cans and hire some city workers to clean up. With plenty of dumpsters and recycle bins, wouldn't the average citizen stop throwing their trash on the ground? Schoolchildren are some of the worst offenders...I've seen them buy candy, tear off the wrappers and just throw it anywhere. Why do the Japanese educate their citizens and why are they so anal about cleanliness? Because they care about their country and keeping it beautiful? |
