A friend of mine had a problem with his "My Computer" icon a few months back, and now it's popped up on my machine.

What basically happens is when I open My Computer, I see the drives, folders, everything. But when I click on the hard drive to explore it, it opens a dialogue box asking what program I want to use to run it. I would like to use Explorer, but it's not an option. I can click on Internet explorer and it works then uses explorer to open it.

It's not affecting anything, it's just annoying.

And another thing, it only affects my C: and D: (one hard drive partitioned into two). It doesn't do anything to My Documents, my external drive, or my USB Memory Key.

I've run Avast, and it found one virus that it deleted. That seemed to work just once as when I tried a second time in My computer, it was back to the annoying stuff. I also deleted a bunch of stuff.

Any ideas.

I would like to blame the problem on your marital status, but somewhat unusually this problem seems to be somewhat divorced from that problem.

Can you turn on "hidden files" ?

It sounds like the KXVO.exe or hbq.exe flavor of malware. Most western/English anti virus programs do NOT pick up on it. I don't know why.

removal is not difficult:
http://wlalng.wordpress.com/2008/02/20/how-to-remove-trojan-that-uses-an-autoruninf-file/

The filename KXVO.EXE was first seen on Oct 19 2007 in KOREA, REPUBLIC OF.

* SPAIN on Oct 19 2007
* The UNITED KINGDOM on Mar 15 2008

The filename KXVO.EXE refers to many versions of an executable program.
The most common file size is 168,596 bytes. But the following file sizes have also been seen:

* 153,899 bytes
* 101,304 bytes
* 150,141 bytes

The filename is associated with the malware group KAVKOP:Trojan-A.Some files using the name KXVO.EXE are also associated with the malware group: * Obfustat.TYA

These files have no vendor, product or version information specified in the file header.
KXVO.EXE has been seen to perform the following behavior(s):

* The Process is packed and/or encrypted using a software packing process
* The Process is polymorphic and can change its structure
* Adds a Registry Key (RUN) to auto start Programs on system start up
* This Process Creates Other Processes On Disk
* This Process Deletes Other Processes From Disk
* Executes a Process
* Writes to another Process's Virtual Memory (Process Hijacking)
* Registers a Dynamic Link Library File
* Loads and Executes a System Driver File

KXVO.EXE has been the subject of the following behavior(s):

* Added as a Registry auto start to load Program on Boot up
* Created as a process on disk
* Executed as a Process
* Deleted as a process from disk
* Executed from Temporary Folders
* Has code inserted into its Virtual Memory space by other programs
* Copied to multiple locations on the system
* Executed by Internet Explorer

Dang it Beaver! I wish I had known about that link you sent before I spent 2 hours last night doing virus scans, etc. I didn't think to check back in so quickly to see if anyone responded!

Thanks again good sir.
