OK, techies, here's a problem for you:

I've moved to China (after too many years in Korea--another topic for another thread) and am very happy with my new uni job here.

I brought with me a newish Samsung desktop (tower only), bought a monitor the other day, and got connected to the Internet via the university's server.

Internet speeds are seemingly just as fast as in Korea--rather to my surprise.

But Emule and Utorrent are completely frozen. Will not connect at all.

I'm not a computer whiz, by any stretch, and was wringing my hands over this until I got the idea to post my problem here.

Three possible problems which come to mind:

1) China is blocking these services country-wide? (a guess).
2) The university is blocking them? (a guess, again).
3) I've simply got to somehow reconfigure for a new IP, or whatever . . .

Any help at all would be SO greatly appreciated, you can't imagine it!

Tor might help.

Some tips for using Tor.

Hope you can access the pages. I have been reading how China is really cracking down; must be part of their pre-Olympic whitewashing.

On the university's network, my guess would be closed ports at the router.

I have the same problem at work.

I don't have a solution for you. Sorry.

China blocks that stuff to control the spread of Tibet images and video, among other things.

You'll probably get a better response on a forum dedicated to foreigners in China - good luck.
