I'm looking to do a few classes on maths through English for my 4th to 6th graders (elementary). Does anyone have any experience of this, and could point me towards some good resources? Keep in mind their level is low, so I'm not aiming too high.
Thanks |

I start by teaching numbers in columns moving from two-digit, to three-digit, to four-digit numbers.
I'll start with
14
27
46
36
84
then add
514
427
346
236
184
go over them, then add more digits to the left. Next I teach them basic maths symbols, many of which they already know the English for. After that I do a maths quiz, asking ten questions with +,-,x, etc. Then I get them to add the total of the ten quesitons and whoever's first to get the right answer gets a little prize. |

yeah, i do what YBS said. also i add a little geometry -- shapes and whatnot. and i like to start with a crossword puzzle on numbers to warm them up.
ACROSS
1. 6+2=___
etc.
edit: and address the thousands, ten thousands, hundred thousands. it'll blow their minds. |

teach them the basic words of arithmetic in English and use the arithmetic symbols so they can understand the word you teach them
add/addition, subtract/subtraction. etc etc etc
and of course there is geometry .. words like circle and square are usefull concepts to know.
btw you must be a Brit, because no American English speaker ever uses math as a plural and the word "mathematics" is very rarely used, except perhaps as a name of a school class/. etc |
