It has been Korea for a bit, but the money is declining fast. Now where will be the next place to go? I am guessing the Middle East. What does everyone else think?

Btw, I am refering to places to go for a decent income and "quality of life."

Definitely NOT the middle east if you're a woman. My mom decided to be a do-gooder for the summer and is teaching English in Iraq. She hates it. It's 120 degrees fahrenheit with no AC. Women's rights are non-existent. Maybe if you're a guy and maybe in the wealthy countries.

This is interesting because someone who'd already been in Korea for awhile when I was a newbie in 1996 said to me: "The five year English teaching window of opportunity was over in 1995." - I asked him what he meant and he said: "We were getting a lot more for privates from 1990-1995 than we are now, there are too many teachers here now, and we had our pick and choose of where we wanted to teach, how many hours we wanted to work a day, etc."

I know someone who has been here since the late 80s, and what he says correlates with what Pooty said; that teaching English back then was like the Wild West- lots of money and great dating opportunties because English teachers were new and exotic.

All signs seem to point to China. Salaries are definitely lower but some pay well and the cost of living sure seems to be cheap.

I was looking at job boards for teaching in Japan yesterday, and they seem to pay well- a little higher than here, but then I also understand the cost of living is higher too.

Of course, it's entirely possible that there is no "next hot spot". Pay and living conditions might be okay but not great everywhere.

The United Arab Emirates- The Plus side They're rich they want to speak Englishto prepare for when all the oil runs out. The country is relatively safe. You can drink and they have Russian hookers.

The down side- Higher standards than Korea. More discipline problems in Public schools.

Consider Vietnam! The economy is growing rapidly, and salaries are quite high, especially relative to the cost of living.

Nonsense.

I'm teaching 25 hrs a week and taking home 2.9 mil a month of which I easilly save 2 mil. That's $2000 a month in savings with my own apt and good lifestyle.

Not good enough for ya..?

It suits me fine.

Apparently you need a permit to buy alcohol there, but it isn't hard to obtain.

You only need a permit to buy it for home use. No problem going to a five star hotel and getting sloshed. Cheap and you don't have to tip anyone.

Drinking at a 5 star hotel is cheap in the UAE? I gotta get over there.

So you're saying it's a lot like Korea.

More on topic:

You would have to pay me a FUCKLOAD of money to even consider teaching in the Middle East. I'm an "adventurous" guy, but I like to live in a nation that doesn't advocate tossing acid in daughter/sister/cousin's faces because they had the gall to speak to a man outside the family.

Forget the middle east, not in a million years.

The next hot place is Absurdistan.

The economy crashed, and the country was in ruins, but it has started to recover.

Beer is still 5 cents a draft. Women are desperate and will throw themselves at any foreign looking man. It's awesome. They all wanna learn English fast and get the hell out.

Don't tell too many people and spoil it though.

Taiwan might be a surpirse packet. If you consider the salaries there are similar to Korea's with a currency to let you buy more dollars or pounds, it might be worth checking.
