Let's face it - mainstream Korean pop music melts the brain. There are some good bands around though, and knowing that Korea does actually produce cool music makes life here much more livable.

I don't want any of the bands I like getting more famous.

My brother-in-law is in a metal band that's getting pretty big, Downhell, and they've had to bend over backwards and put up with the lamest crap just for a shot at being big. Their bassist is a girl but she's not very talented--they just have her in the band because it's easier for a band to get shows if they have a female musician. There's even a reality TV show that follows them around all the time, documenting this struggle of a mediocre female musician playing music in a music scene dominated by men and talented musicians. The band has to suck up to more famous musicians all the time, and are basically corporate employees.

Another band I know, Crying Nut, has been famous for a while longer. It is written in their contract that they are not allowed to go out drinking with their friends after a show because they have to maintain the rockstar mystique. Plus their manager refuses to let them play all sorts of shows with their friends.

And let's not forget No Brain, who sold one of their songs for the political campaign of a politician they disliked.

Fame sucks. Especially in Korea. I'm not saying every famous band or musician is a hack, but it really, really helps. I'd hate to see any of my friends lose their love of making music, and not be able to hang out and get wasted late at night anymore.

Hm, a new pop singer called Evan is pretty good but his style is quite unique from other K-Pop, yet he's not very popular at all. He just released a new music video, and I thought after a couple of listens (I always give a song a chance) it really grew on me. As for regular K-POP, well even the most brain melting artists occasionally release a nice number - It's just everything else on their albums is skip worthy.

Yeah, it's weird how that works. Apparently it's due to pressure from the record company to put out whatever number of albums they're contracted to. That's the main difference between an underground album and a mainstream album--on an underground album, all the songs are more equal, for better or worse.

Hah, that's funny. I like this band, Peterpan Complex. They happen to have a female drummer as well. Smile

While randomly youtubing Korean indie bands, I gladly found this old song I used to like.

Peterpan Complex is alright, but A) too Pablo Honey and B) I'm not sure if they're underground. I do dig them personally, though.

What the hell kind of country is this? Someone should inform these apparently Mensa-level geniuses that the "rockstar mystique" involves copious amounts of alcohol, VD and general debauchery.

As do I, but they're not exactly underground.

I'm trying to rack my brain for underground that isn't playing in Hongdae all the time. I never did find a CD from Blue in Green so that's my best go.

PeteJB is right, even some of the mushy boy bands produce some cool songs sometimes and some of the cool bands will have one good song on a new CD and the rest is crap (Yoon Do Hyun comes to mind for this).

Doggyji. That song you posted is pretty cool. And I like Peterpan Complex too.

Racetraiter, have you ever heard of 'uh uh boo band'?

Plus99, the name sounds better in Korean. They have a great song called Irony but I can't find in on the internet.

Can anyone else post up links to youtube or other sites hosting good videos? No Super Junior thanks.

And for the benefit of those completely new to Korean music, here's Crying Nut.

Is that the show with the cute multi-ethnic Korean? I saw it a couple of times. I would have never guessed it was a metal band because the show seems geared towards teen girls.
