I've read on this forum how Korea will employ any native speaking graduate to teach English, simply because they are desperate to learn English, from native speakers.
Be honest, is there a part of you which feels relieved to hear that?!!
I don't intend to put myself down, I am a competent teacher, but.........
Let's face it, for them to want to employ me and other posters on this forum, makes me think, wow....they really must be desperate!  |

No, it makes me think that my qualifications will be overlooked because someone can't see past the native English speaker/fair skinned morphology
oops guess what ?
seems a lot of foreigners look at me the same way - she's fair skinned, blonde - she couldn't possibly KNOW anything, duh.
so I'm alienated on 2 fronts.....
pretty frustrating, it is.  |

they look me up and down, roll their eyes then look the other way.
they avoid conversation with me even if I am sitting at their table at a social function.
less than 5 minutes of conversation yet somehow the subject of whether or not my hair is dyed or natural manages to be discussed
they express surprise when I mention any one of a number of accomplishments as if it's never crossed their mind ?
btw, I've spoken to other women with similar characteristics and they say the same thing - just look at the proliferation of blond jokes on the web says a lot - not to mention the classic stereotype of the blond in the media. |
