I just got an external harddrive. My plan was to use it to carry movies and music to SK with me. The problem is DVDs don't just transfer over like music files do.

Anyone know of a good program to transfer from DVD to the harddrive? My goal is to have a single .avi or .wmv file rather than all the bits and pieces on the DVD.

I've still got 500GB of space on external harddrive, so space is not a huge concern.

Basically what you are looking for is a program that will rip the DVD, thus bypassing the security features.

Then you will want to re-encode it to .avi - so I presume DIVX.

Not to sound harsh, but for the time and work that will take, it is easier just to hit up Newsgroups and download said movies as a DIVX format. (Or use torrents...)

To rip the DVD can take 1~2 hours depending on your computer. I think the program I use for that is DVDFab Platinum 4.

I do not re-encode to DIVX though just because that would take way too long and I can download said movie in probably 20mins.

EDIT: I see you are in your home country. You can get FAST internet over in Korea with no bandwidth limits per month. Maybe its better to download stuff over here?

DVDShrink works for many DVDs. It's free. Some are DVDs are copy-protected, but if you install a trial version of AnyDVD, you can rip them with DVDShrink without any issues.

Fair warning: IMO DVDshrink doesn't do a great re-encoding job compared to other software out there.

why? DIVX sucks - the quality is crappy - just copy the entire dvd over.

Best thing to do is use your DVD burning software and copy the DVD to iso - he's got a 500gb drive so space is not an issue.

To rip and avoid the encryption, use DVD Decrypter.

Don't know why you'd bother with all that if you want an .avi file, though. Like Mr. Pink said, easier to just download.

Seems like the download is the easiest way.

But I have so much space.

I suppose I'll encode all the music that isn't available online.

Thanks for the help.
