Moving up to the ghetto:
take a walk through Haebangchon and you'll see about ten of them.
try the accomodations sections on English Spectrum, worknplayglobal, and craig's list Seoul. |

Thanks Drunken,
Yeah, excited about moving to the ghetto...Well, not really, but I'm less excited about forking over 10k for key money in nicer areas of the city.
I'm going to hit the realty offices on the street if I can't get a recommendation. Was hoping, though, that someone had a good experience with with one of the local offices and could forward me their info.
Well....anyone?
What's with English Spectrum? It's been down all day? |

Speaks English, and his rentals are in the price range of the average teacher (assuming that's what you are). Take a look. |

I know Eden has a spiffy looking site and somewhat entertaining comments, but don't put all your eggs in that basket as the guy in charge is... ahem... quirky.
I contacted him a few weeks ago to ask him whether he would help me find a new place, and he sounded very friendly in his emails. But when I showed up at his office at the appointed time he was completely distant and unprofessional and said he was "too sick" to show me anything -- end of story. So I had to scramble and visit a half dozen "Budongsan" offices that day to make up for lost time. Absolutely ridiculous.
Good luck anyway; I know people who were happy with his picks, and others who got the cold shoulder like I did... |

Parisny,
So, did you find a recommendable bu dong san?
How much did you pay the realtor for commission?
Did you have any problems being a foreigner and signing a contract?
Thanks for the help!! |

Try SS realty...They speak english and the guy is generally good...I've had no problems with him but try to find a different mover rather than his friends one cause they are a little more expensive... |

Eden is alright. Quirky yes, but he has a lot of good places. He found us an excellent apartment.
By law, they can only charge 20% commission. Eden charges 20% for finding an apartment and an extra 10% because he is offers additional support. He does things like help with getting a phone, bank account etc. or at least that is what he told me when I asked why he wanted 30% instead of 20%. We told him we didn't need the extra help. No problem. Dropped the commission to 20%.
Check him out. It is worth putting up with his quirky nature. He's alright, a nice guy, and we think very honest. |

* They will show you at least 6 to 10 crap apartments first before they show you anything good.
* They often like to bait/switch, so websites are pretty much worthless.
* A crap place for 800,000 per month can cost the same as a great place for 800,000 per month.
* Julie's Realty is now on the US Army's "off-limits" list due to an investigation into major fraud.
The rule of the game is to search around... don't just stick to one realtor if you're not having luck. |
