Demining work in Cypriot capital
Ledra Street is seen as a symbolic crossing point in the divided city
United Nations demining experts have started work sweeping a buffer zone which divides the Cypriot capital Nicosia for explosives.
The sweep is part of preparations to reopen the symbolic crossing point of Ledra Street, which separates the Greek and Turkish sectors of Nicosia.
It follows a breakthrough meeting last week at which the two sides agreed the street should open as soon as possible.
Preparation work is expected to last about 10 days.
No-man's land
Once the area is cleared of any discarded ordinance, a process which should be completed by the end of Wednesday, the decaying buildings that lie within the no-man's land need to be shored up.
Work to make the area safe for pedestrians should last 10 days
Ledra Street has been a symbol of the conflict on the island, which was divided along ethnic lines after a Turkish invasion in 1974, which itself followed a brief, Greek-inspired coup.
