Tell them that they shouldn't be eating meat anyway
Like, link them to some PETA sites, and give them Vegan literature (doesn't even matter if you are or not). Basically, take the argument into a different direction and be more hardcore than they are. |

Why create a story for them? Just tell them if they don't like it, don't buy it. |

See, I'd rather *shame* them. That's way more fun. |

I tried that edge. The reply was that restaurant owners will but it and sell it in their dishes, thereby infecting the population unknowingly. I told her to ask where the meat came from before she ate it....to which she replied "they will lie about that."
This is also the same girl, who in the same conversation, told me that Koreans don't lie and that the information from the Korean scientists and media is truthful.
I told her that it was the Korean restaurant owners fault for lying, not the beefs fault for being diseased. |

I avoid the argument by agreeing with them. Not pretending to agree with them; actually agreeing. The U.S. meat industry behaved very irresponsibly and continues to do so. Restaurants outside of America who get a good deal on American beef probably WILL lie if theyneed to in order to sell it. Australian beef is better. I'm not capitulating to Korean nationalism. I've always believed this. |

By that logic, how do you know that what you have been eating is "really" Australian beef? I seriously doubt you would find success in the Pepsi challenge.
There are several ways that ranchers may choose to raise their cattle. Blanketing "all" American beef as tasting the same shows a lack of research and experience with fat juicy steaks. |

The American meat industry is massive, the quality of the beef varies according to the producer. Living in California, I always liked Harris Ranch beef, I've actually been to the ranch and seen the cows (who appeared relatively content). Prime grade beef does come at a premium price.
However, ironically, select beef (with less marbeling) is healthier, and tastes nearly as good if you don't over-cook it.
Anyway, there was an ironic moment. In my Cheong-ju neighborhood, there are no sidewalks, and the narrow, two-way streets (with insufficient room for 2 cars to pass each other) are essentially death waiting to happen any pedestrian, esp. the tons of school kids that trudge home from school.
And sure enough, on the way to school, I saw a man lying on the ground in the middle of the street, and a car stopped just beyond him. He'd obviously been run down.
No freakin sidewalks. The second accident I've seen around my house and I've been here 3 months.
And five minutes later I was going over dialogues about the perils of mad cow, which has killed none of the 300 plus Americans who eat beef on a nearly daily basis, and which has never infected a Korean.
I was gonna say "You people need to worry about sidewalks, not American beef". But I didn't. I stayed relatively neutral, my "American take" was I wish they'd re-instate the ban simply because it's bad for America's image, and after George W., we have a lot of work to do in that regard. |

Aaaahhh.... I love the yangpa
Come on now, I just had a very reasonable conversation about the beef issue with one of my students (a woman about 45 yrs of age). As I have done in all of my conversations on the topic, I pointed out that if Koreans really cared about their health maybe they wouldn't live in severely polluted Seoul, work 12 hours a day 6 days a week, and then drink themselves to death. My student, an avid hiker and devout buddhist, gave me a big smile of agreement. |

because I like to stare death in the face.

That is one of the few Korean words I know so I can say "Yangpa baygo, juseyo." |

It's good that you added that last part, because they might be confused if you eat beef or not... I'm not joking... what? pork, fish, chicken, dog, camel, and squirrels are all meat??? since when?

It's good to see that there are a few enlightened people. Of the various people that I have talked with, only a few could fathom the idea that the news was fake, even after showing them the article from the Korean Times regarding the "hunt" for those responsible for creating the fake news. One of them even understood what the entire story was about, not the beef, but the dislike of the current president and why even why many people might not like them... Then again this one person I find to be very intelligent and thoughtful even on matters we don't agree on. |

Those "fake news" were known to be fake almost from the beginning by the media. They have nothing to do with the core issues with American beef. Those responsible goverment officials do side-stepping using such fake rumors. Of course, there is misinformation. However, perishing them doesn't even seem to come near breaking down the main arguments.
Anyone interested in the main beef controversies, please visit this thread and express your opinions. I put much time and there's no comment yet. |
