ISLAMIC cleric Abu Bakar Bashir has returned to his hardline rhetoric with a call for followers to "beat up" Western tourists and for young Muslims to die as martyrs.

In the sermon, organised by an Islamic youth organisation and delivered a few kilometres from the home village of convicted Bali bombers Amrozi and Mukhlas, Bashir likened tourists in Bali to "worms, snakes, maggots", and specifically referred to the immorality of Australian infidels.

The address was caught on video by an Australian university student.

"The youth movement here must aspire to a martyrdom death," said the cleric, who was convicted of conspiracy over the 2002 Bali bombings that killed 202 people, including 88 Australians, but was later cleared and released from prison.

"The young must be first at the front line - don't hide at the back. You must be at the front, die as martyrs and all your sins will be forgiven. This is how to achieve forgiveness."

Observers said the sermon's content was a clear indication of what many terrorism academics have noted - that the accused spiritual head of Jemaah Islamiah has been emboldened by his release from prison last year after serving 26 months for conspiracy in relation to the Bali blasts.

"Immediately after Abu Bakar Bashir was released from incarceration he was very cautious in spreading hatred," said Rohan Gunaratna, head of the International Centre for Political Violence and Terrorism Research at Singapore's Nanyang Technological University. "The remarks show that Abu Bakar Bashir has gone back to the pre-incarceration period where he was in a very similar way urging JI members, encouraging JI members to move in the direction of violence, especially violence including terrorism."

Well, Indonesia gave him one chance after 26 months in prison. Perhaps, he needs another 26 more months in prison to think about what he said. As far as killing tourists, that is not sanctioned by Islam though the Jemaah Islamiya in Egypt, for example, did that before Egypt cracked down on them like crazy. The Egyptian population, though they are conservative, are against the attack on tourists. It affects their livelihood and makes them feel ashamed. I don't think your average Indonesian supports such fanatacism. I have not lived in Indonesia. Perhaps, someone who lived in that country can shed some light on the people based on their experiences. Are their fanatical imams out there like Bashir. Certainly? Do they need to be stopped and even jailed? Certainly.

Please post here and refrain from saying anything unkind about any
muslim person or any hate group within the muslim community and don't
refer to these hater groups as hate groups you are only allowed to
categorize America as the great satan and call for the killing of
Australians.

The kind and loving extremist wish us death out of love and martyr
themselves for us let us be greatful that a kind and loving god has
blessed us with their presence in our world.

I remember reading on-line a poll showing a massive decline in Pakistan in terms of popularity for the likes of Osama Bin Ladin. The majority of Pakistani do not favour at least extremism to that extent. It doesn't mean there aren't with certain kinds of extremism. The Middle East is not Sweden as many Israeli politicians say. That is true.

Of course, extremists encourage death. Does it matter where the extremists are from? What if they are or were in the White House?
Could it be argued the Bush Administration had its extremists with the neo-cons. The terrorists in Bali killed, perhaps, 100 innocent Australian civilians, and people won't see those loved ones again, which is very heart-wrenching, but what about the thousands who died, because of the actions of the Christian Right and the neo-cons? A friend lost his best friend when 9/11 happened. He had nothing to do with politics.
So many people get killed in this world because of tribalism. Anyway, how many people died due to the action of the neo-cons?

People who call for violence or war crimes or terrorism are criminals and should be stopped including this Bashir. What do you think about that?
I would like Bashir in jail. Inciting hatred, if it isn't a crime, in Indonesia should be. If he were in Egypt, he'd be in jail, though I don't approve of torture used there.
