Sorry guys, it's another "Building computer" spec. I actually want to build a PC. I don't care about money so much as having a good time putting it together. I checked the sticky's from other tech boards and came up with a spec I enjoyed. I headed to Yongsin hoping to get the parts I needed, but it proved more difficult with a language barrier and not having the parts I needed (everything I researched came from newegg).

So, I checked out a few sites on the Korean websites, but am having a lot of trouble going through them... Anyway, just going to ask anyone if they know where to buy computer parts online or where in Yongsin to go (I feel wary about buying graphic cards/mobo's from street venders).

I know my specs, but before I commit myself to buying a monitor and a case, I want to know that I'll be able to get the parts (mobo, gpu, cpu, ram, dvd/cd, harddrive).

Son-in plaza. Ttompatz or eamo or someone has the graphic if you don't know how to get there. Basically go across the tracks at yongsan, take a right after you cross the tunnel and you should find it.

You should be able to find everything there, and with the exchange rate these days you should be able to find newegg equivalent prices.

Seon-in plaza.
If you look across the tracks from the plaza level at Yongsan station you will see a blue building. That is the "Terminal building". To the right of that you will see a building with a big gigabyte sign. That is the Seon-in plaza.

From the street you will walk up a small ramp. You will see 2 doors. Go in the LEFT door. The 1st place on the left is OK for parts and prices.

Personally, I prefer J-tech. They are down the hall to the end, turn right and they are the 1st place on the right. The sign looks like this:

They are just about the busiest place in the building (always) so they are hard to miss.

You can have the full enjoyment by bypassing local purchasing all together and heading to pricewatch.com...this gives you great ideas on the hardware. then you just take on the shipping headaches instead if you don't have APO access.

Just as reference, there is no way you can build a system for the prices that you can get (that even includes warranty) from manufacturers such as dell, emachines, hp...

Originally when i started years and years ('93) ago, I bought a high end system and that was the system I learned from. After that, building was much more about the knowledge that couldn't be learned without books...slot compatibility, socket compatibility, bus compatibility, memory compatibility.

Nowadays, compatibility requirements have almost been eliminated...if something fits in the slot, it works (everything has backwards compatibility these days). Which makes building about preferences of case, MB, Proc, mem...than anything else.

ya, i was hoping i'd be able to build from scractch. from newegg and pricewatch, my min specs with a nice cpu, good mobo, and great graphics card would cost me about $600 US.

It's unfortunate for two reasons. One, that doesn't include international shipping. Two, I get paid in Won, which has gotten lower than palin's likeability.

That sucks...I'm on the opposite side with fixed rate (weight doesn't matter) USPS shipping to APO and getting paid in dollars...The rate was up to 1408W/1$!

I only buy from online stores or from on base, the question is, how much hassle is this "build it yourself" option worth? Could you just buy a system and learn from it? My guess is that you could find a prebuilt system pretty close to your specs...

He could get it custom built to spec for 20k more than the cost of the parts at Seon-in plaza.

It's all about DIY....

I want to bring my HDs and RAM over, but not the rest of my desktop. Is this smart? will I be able to find a bare bones system in Korea, or should I look into getting a laptop and external HD enclosures?

Nothing wrong with that, some people even consider it to be the recommended approach. I think you can find barebones systems, and if not you can find all the parts anyway, so...

Not a bad idea at all, and you may want to consider bringing a decent vid card with you too, they are alot cheaper in NA than the equivalent here.
