A colleague of mine is going to be finished working in May. His arrival date or date that show his visa expires is about 7-10 days before he is actually finished working here. What should he do about it? I tend to believe that if you worked the extra few days that it would not be such a big deal. However, I guess it might be something the school might have to take care of as well. He just wants to make sure he doesn't screw himself over with the government here for when he wants to return in the fall. Would be appreciated if you have any suggestions or experience with this....

He needs an extension (even for that short time).
He can get a simple extension for up to 30 days (free) simply by showing his exit ticket, ARC and passport. The bad news is that it is illegal to work on this type of extension.
An extension for WORKING costs 30k won.
He will need:
1. Visa Extension Application
2. Passport and your Alien Registration Card
3. copy of the contract (showing completion dates)
4. Sponsorship Certificate (from school)
5. A copy of Certificate of School / Business Registration (from school)
6. Processing Fee
7. New Criminal Record Certificate
8. New Health Check Certificate
NOT getting an extension will certainly cause him problems when he tries to leave. At best he:
-WILL be delayed at passport control and questioned about his overstay.
-WILL get a blackmark on his immigration file (that may cause problems if he wants to come back to teach in the fall) and
-PROBABLY get him a fine of 100k won.

A criminal record check is needed for a short extension? AAAAGH. Won't this affect every teacher as the date you arrive is unlikely to ever be the day your contract starts. So, unless I am missing something everyone has to extend.... (ok, I know in the 'old days' many folks worked illegally and then went to Japan after a few weeks, so they are ok,) but I got all my paperwork done beforehand and my contract runs a few days after the ARC expires.
Again, aaaaaagh. |
