Pastors Arrested for Selling Fake Degrees

By Park Si-soo
Staff Reporter

A group of pastors were arrested on charges of running religious schools without permission and selling fake academic certification and other documents to pastor hopefuls, police said.

Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency said Wednesday that it booked two pastors identified as Cho, 60, and Hong, 58, for running unauthorized theological schools and selling forged documents regarding academic background and career experience.

Police also booked eight of their ``customers'' including one pastor identified as Jung, 51, without physical detention on charges of purchasing bogus licenses required to run social welfare facilities.

According to police, Cho established a religious school in 1990 without the government's permission in North Jeolla Province.

Until 2005, he churned out more than 1,000 pieces of fabricated documents including student IDs, diplomas, national licenses and journalist IDs and sold them at prices ranging from 50,000 won through 300,000 won. Police say he has amassed more than 400 million won during the period.

He gathered students though a false promotion campaign in which he claimed a famed pastor ran the school. He is also on suspicion of forcibly selling forged journalist ID to pastor hopefuls, saying ``journalist ID is very helpful overseas.''

The other pastor Cho has run an unauthorized theological school in Seoul until recently. He is also on suspicion of producing hundreds of fabricated licenses and selling them to his pupils.

``The majority of those attending their schools were to unlawfully upgrade their academic backgrounds or achieve public licenses,'' said a police officer.

The Koreans always blame the foreign community for selling fake degrees well it just shows that Korean Pastors are up to no good and actually are the reason for the number of fake degrees. What's your opinion?

I could care less, I don't have a complex about Koreans always blaming the foreign community. Actually, I don't think they do.

What's new about this? Fake degrees are not anything really big news over here. There was some scandal about a professor with a fake degree and such. Of course, it's horrible that a pastor would have fake degrees. Well, for some, church is just a business or they will use the cover of church for their gain. I am not sure I think this is big news.
The cloning story was big news. This is peanuts, isn't it?
