So I called up McDelivery (it is what it sounds like) on Sunday morning. At 3 AM. They took my order and told me it would be one hour and twenty minutes. I was outraged. And drunk. Mainly drunk. Who orders food an hour and twenty minutes ahead of time? So I sarcastically said, "Why not just deliver it to me on Wednesday?" and the lady asked if that's what I really wanted. So I made up another order, a huge one involving lots of Big Mac sets, and set it for 11:17 on Wednesday.

They've called me 4 times already. If I wasn't at work, I'd probably just pay for it.

Just saw that McDelivery will not deliver to foreigners now because of prank orders!!!

Amazing that food delivery anywhere, especially in 빨리 빨리 한국, can take that long.

Why? McDonald's in Korea usually takes about an hour anyways if you happen to order something not already getting soggy on their rack.

Delivery is usually pretty good with chicken and pizza, at least in my neighborhood. Usually 25 to 30 minutes, which is reasonable.

But when I go to fast food restaurants, I learn that "fast" was lost in translation. Last time I went to Lotteria---yes, I know, but I like it----they told me I had to wait 10 minutes for my order. I've gone to the local McDonald's for breakfast and had to wait that long for a value meal. I don't even try to do a special order. Burger King seems to have their act together, though.

Most fast food places will not "premake" food. When you order something, you have to wait for them to make it from scratch.

Fast food chains in the US do the same thing. Every place did away with heatlamps after Subway make a killing with their "Eat Fresh" campaign.

Yes, but then it comes down to "How fast can you make a burger?" Here in Korea, it seems not so fast.

Back home and most McD's and other places I went to (recently I might add, within the year), I got my order in a couple of minutes at most.

Yes, I know, I managed a McDonald's in high school and college. Unless it's a very slow time of day, though, they won't make beef patties, chicken pieces, or fries to order. I mean, if it's 9:30 at night and there's no business, then yeah, but never during the afternoon or dinner. So when that happened to me at 6:00 pm, it was kinda weird.

Moreover, there's no reason it should take 10 minutes to make. What was happening, I assume, was that there was an order before me, so they were making theirs first, then mine. That doesn't explain, though, why they couldn't have cooked my burger or dropped the cheesesticks while they were waiting for the other customer's food to be prepared.

As I've written before, you go into a tiny cell phone shop and there are 4 employees. You go to a coffee shop and there are 5 employees. Walk into an E-Mart and there are two women per aisle. Go to Lotteria and there's two people working: one person taking money, one person making food. Doesn't make sense.

I'm worried that there will be a red-haired clown waiting at my door to do a little McShakedown.

Regarding speed, McDelivery is hit or miss, but usually it's pretty good. Sometimes it comes insanely fast. It's true that McDonald's doesn't use the heat lamps anymore, but it's just a matter of assembling the burger. The reason it's so slow is those high school kids who work there are so lazy.

5 minutes of that 10 you waited came from wrapping the burger 4 times, putting it into 3 different bags, and then taking yoru drink, putting THAT in a bag too.

Come on, you should know that.

You're joking, right? Most fast food places have a queue of their more popular items (Big Macs, Whoppers, etc) pre-cooked to get them out quicker. Only time they're making it "to order" is if you order something uncommon or if you order it with non-standard toppings. Go to any McD's or BK (and most others) and you can actually SEE the premade stuff sitting under the lamps.

Obviously at 3am they probably don't have much pre-made, but to say that they never queue popular items is just plain wrong.

There McMoning menu starts at 4am, so I can see how it would take till 4:20 if you were ordering stuff from the morning menu at 3am.

We were always told 30 mins, but the scooter would show up in 15 mins.

Was it just regular stuff you ordered or McMonings?

The context of the OP's post was at 3am. Any fast food restaurant manager would be a complete idiot to stock all their popular food items at 3AM waiting for the phantom midnight snack rush of customers.

Also, this is Korea. They won't even premake french fries. If 3 people order fries, they'll tip that frozen fry bag over until exactly 3 servings fall into the cooking basket. And this is during peak food times.
