Yet another nanny policy was turned up another notch today at Bupyeong station.

As I was trying to transfer from Line #1 to the Incheon Line, lots of clowns were around holding up signs that said (In Korean) 'Don't walk or run on the escalator, and be sure to hold onto the handrail.'

As I got on the escalator, I could hear the identical message being blared over megaphones from the stairs next to the escalator. In front of us on the escalator, 2 men wearing sashes and carrying the same signs were standing shoulder to shoulder in order to stop the flow of traffic from being able to walk or run. These 2 men go down the escalator, then go up the other side, blocking people there too, then repeat.

The signs have some very humorous statistics. Apparently, in 2007, (GASP!!) 63 people were injured while walking/running on escalators. And most of them were (no surprise here) children, senior citizens, and drunks.

Now children are innocent, and their injuries were caused by negligent parents, so I can understand that. But if drunks are falling down on escalators, I couldn't give 2 shits. Old people....well, they're old enough to know their limitations.

Yeah, I heard they were thinking about making it illegal to walk on escalators. They should make it illegal to not walk on them.

I don't care if they want to change the law. Me and 30 other people behind me are all pissed when trying to walk up the left side of a escalator and some dumb mf just stands there.

I'm still shocked every time someone runs a red light. Usually they don't even stop... meanwhile, I'm still worried about jaywalking.

You're not serious are you? I thought the whole idea was to encourage standing on the right, walking on the left.

I never stand on an escalator, and I always to my best to walk up with loud clompy footsteps if I see a couple of oblivious little middle-school girls twittering away and blocking the escalator up ahead. A friendly 'jamsinmanyo' always works a treat.

That is so stupid. How many people are hurt walking up and down regular stairs each year? And what do you do if there are no stairs, just an escalator and it's broken (which seems to be about 25 percent of the time)?

It looks like they're not going to outlaw it, just strongly encourage people to stand still on escalators in hopes that it becomes the social norm.

I'm just that happy that scooters are banned from them!

Last years co-teacher watched a program on TV about the premature wear on Korean escalators, as everyone tends to stand to one side to allow runners past (a policy in force at one time, my wife informed me).

She was amazed when I said in the UK, we normally stand side by side.
Logic moment: It allows twice as many people to be moved at any given time, hence less crowding.
She seen the brilliance of such a method, and wondered why Korea was so different.
Again, I'm just glad scooters are banned.
99.9% of my escalator experiences these days are with a shopping trolley.

They stop people from walking on the escalators? Where's the harm in that?

What's even more absurd, as others have pointed out, is that red lights aren't enforced and scooters are allowed free reign on sidewalks, but they focus on escalator safety.

It would be more helpful if they would encourage people (Korean guys) to wash their hands after taking a dump. As for grabbing the rail on the escalator... No thanks!

Here is the new sign that they can carry:
