|

Hello all.
I just found out that I am going to be teaching in Suwon, starting April 25th (at Chilbo Elementary School). I would love to meet anyone else who is currently in Suwon or headed that direction.
Any insight you can give me? I've been told that I'll be getting a studio apartment (which I'm sure will be half the size of a dorm room, but that's okay). Would you say that Suwon is a good city to be placed in?
Let me know your thoughts!
Cheers,

Nope nobody there.
Tiny little town.
Mainly chickens and rats running the streets.
You are a brave person to live in that much of a rural area. |

i will be heading to suwon this saturday...teaching with an american school...
the selling point for Suwon for me was that its the footballing capital of South Korea. So if you like loud hooligans then you should fit in... |

How far is Suwon from Incheon? If its not too far ill come down and play some football.
I'll be moving to incheon soon and need a football team. Im a pretty good player too (Ex-Sheffield United Academy and South Yorkshire Schoolboy), would have become pro if I kept to it... but that wasn't for me. |

Suwon is the Capital of Gyeonggi province. It has a population of just over 1 million.
I don't know what part of the city that school is in so I can't give you specifics on that area.
To the person who was asking, Suwon is about 90 minutes from Incheon by public transport (bus and/or subway). |

Been there at an open class last year, it is on the East side. Not a too heavily built-up place, not far from Suwon station. The co-teacher was good with plenty English, unless they've changed teachers.
You should have a good time^^. |

Suwon is a fairly large city(around) 1 million and has a subway and train station that you will find quite useful. Seoul is about an hour away. Get ready for dense population and I hope you are not claustrophobic. Good luck. |

?? Suwon station is on the far-western side of town. If the school is in the east (i.e. Youngtong-gu) then it's not really THAT close.
Welcome to Suwon, politica!
EDIT: Oh, forgot. Suwon seems to have a reputation on Dave's as being extraordinarily dirty and smelly. I think that's mostly in the older part of town. Youngtong-gu is only very dirty and smelly. |

Hey, thanks for all the replies.
I hope no one got the impression that I was concerned about living in Suwon. I've lived in India and Palestine in the past, so I'm not afraid of a little dirt, literally or otherwise. I was just looking for a little more info on the town itself. How about this . . . Is there a good foreigner/expat community? Do they socialize much? Any decent cafes or coffeeshops? Opportunities for hiking, camping, or other outdoor adventures? Nightlife? Anything else you can impart on me?
So it seems that Chilbo is in the Yeongtong-Gu neighborhood?
I've never been much of football/soccer fan, but I could totally get into it. I'm open to new things . . .
Thanks again folks.

Suwon is great. Every time I go there I have a good time just walking around the Fortress and taking in the sights. It's a big city, it has modern and traditional, and it has more umphf than most places in Seoul (in my opinion). I'd recommend it, but make sure you have good housing. |

i was there for a month. it's not too bad, but let's just say that when i was looking for a job, i purposefully avoided suwon.
i was lonely, most of my friends were in seoul or further north, and consequently i ate at home often because i rarely had friends to go to restaurants with. suwon train station is ok, it's quite big and there seems to be a lot going on around rodeo street, or whatever that string of pubs is called. a little too crude for me though...it's survivable but i personally wouldn't choose to live there. that hwaseo palace/fortress is huge and beautiful though. good place to clear your mind. |

Hey Politica,
I am moving to Suwon around the same time (late April) and I am looking for people to hang out with as there is only one other foreign English teacher at my school. Do you know what part of town you are in? I am in Tap-Dong which is about 15 mins from the station. |
