So, I left Korea to go to Portland State University to get a master's in TESOL; despite being a little done with Korea, I did have a life set up there--the usual apartment, girlfriend, tons of job options, etc.
Now though, Portland State is seriously fucking me over, adding more and more prerequisites, even though they should have told me this crap MONTHS ago. Apparently, now my 2 years of language at U of I aren't good enough because I applied outside of their 4 year deadline for having a language. Oh, and guess where the *beep* this requirement is mentioned on their website? http://www.ling.pdx.edu/degrees_MA_TESOL.html Motherf'ing nowhere.
I just talked to the head of the department, and he told me that I can petition, and that I might even have a good chance of making it. At this point though, I have a severe lack of confidence in this school.
Like, I just reread the course booklet, and found the section that mentions the language requirement...hilarity: first, it's on page 69, it's in the *graduation requirement* section, and doesn't even mention the 4 year deadline. Gee, how did I miss this at all?
I just got an apartment, bike, cool roommates (just found out last night that they fucking run a community bike repair shop for free), and it's looking like I'm pretty much set to be on a jet-plane back to Korea or Thailand and spin my wheels for another six months. F*ck. |

I sympathize, but could you explain what you mean by this:

Get your head out of your a$$, quit venting, be a man and state your case.
Anyone who is half intelligent knows about all the bureaucracy that goes on with universities these days. |

Dude, that's the thing; I understand the reasoning, and at this point, I can concede that it's been a while since I've been to school, but this is all stuff that I could have easily been informed about a while ago. It's the difference between making an informed decision and a forced one. When I was told that I'd have to take intro linguistics and grammar as prereqs, it was months before I came out here, and I was fine with it in the end, though annoyed. Having another prereq added...while I'm here...and that's only being added because I missed an arbitrary date by months...is garbage, and a bad sign. If this is what it's like at the *start*, what will it be like when I write my thesis, etc?
I'm not done with grad school by any means, but Portland State ain't the place. |

Well, PSU has a language requirement of 2 years. Thing is, if it's been more than 4 years since you've attended a language class, you have to: take an advanced class in the same language or pass an advanced test, both of which I'll fail since it's been years since I've taken Italian. Mind you, all of this info is buried in the 69th page of their course booklet, of which, I've only seen a pdf, on top of the fact that I don't know why this wasn't vetted and communicated before I came since they vetted the other 2 prereqs I needed. This is definitely a "straw that broke the camel's back" situation. |
