Public Elementary. There's a 'teach the teachers' class every two weeks, Fridays, for thirty minutes. That's right. One 30 minute class every two weeks. Intense, huh?^^

I did one class and had a situation, 'you're on a deserted island'. In this theme I asked them:
-How did you get on the island (they answered, 'plane crash', 'shipwreck', 'pirates attacked my ship', etc.)
-What's the first thing you do there? (they answered, 'find water').
-Where did you find water? (they answered, 'in the forest in a leaf like a cup, rainwater', 'dig a well', etc.).
-How do you find food? (they answered, 'go fishing').
-What tools do you make to fish with? (they answered, 'trident spear', 'net made from treeroot string', etc.).
And so on............good topic/situation.

Can you suggest any other situations? Thanks.

Get a copy of "The Non-stop Discussion Workbook" or for lower levels "Can't Stop Talking". They have lots of similar situations.

How many teachers? If you have 6 - 10 ask them what they did on Friday night, Saturday, Saturday night, Sunday and Sunday night. First review past tense.

If that doesnt fill the whole lesson, as them about the next weekend, what they will do, after reviewing future tenses.

This will have them using English to express stuff they are interested in, because it is what they did, and what they will do.

Thanks Ajuma.

I'll look for those books. I'm not sure if that's necessary though since I need only 11 more situations, one a month, to fill out the year. I was just wondering if anyone could spin a yarn/situation up off the top of their head to see what folks come up with and perhaps use.

This situation style class with questions and answers is very good. As good as the situation is to start it off with.

For example I can think of one right now. An alien from Mars comes to earth. This situation can go two ways, fork off into two directions. One direction is that the alien comes in peace and just wants to make a go of it on earth. The other 'sub-situation' is that the alien is a representative of his species at the spearpoint of an invasion attempt.
-You are an alien on earth, just landed. What's the first thing you do? (their answer (I suppose), 'find earth clothing', 'trade gold I brought for the local currency at a jewellery shop', etc.)
And so on....

M, there are twenty teachers. Yes, that's a good idea talking about what they do but I'd rather not because I'm afraid they'll not want to talk about their personal life in front of their colleages. Or, you know how it is sometimes, they might say their hobby is 'computer games' or some other boring answer like that. I can't stand that thunk when those ten ton answers come out and squash the mood^^.

Give a review of all the occupations there are. Tell them they have to pick 10 -12 to go into space and repopulate the earth in a few years (after the asteroid dust settles). Then ask why they chose those certain professions

captain kirk: A few of the topics in the book: Ordering a baby (put them in pairs and have them create the perfect child. Include height, weight, hair color, eye color, skills, etc.

Who do you invite to dinner? You can invite any 6 people, living or dead.

You inherit a LOT of money (or win the lottery). What do you do with it?

Best places to visit in Korea.

If you could interview anyone in the world, what questions would you ask him/her?

I think with adults, it is always a safe bet to get them to generate the discussion topics. Still if not possible or not what they want, I often use "writing prompts" as speaking prompts. Here are two big topic lists (one my own and the other a very famous one..) that can also be used for speaking. Give the handout and ask them to choose a topic and then they brainstorm the issues and then discuss / develop What if scenarios around that.

Thanks, good idea, far out! What if the asteroid dust does NOT settle, what then? More topic for conversation I suppose. How falling asteroid dust resembles the vicious yellow sand that assaults Korea and so on^^.

Thanks A!. I wonder what their favourite place to visit in Korea is? Kyongju, Cheju, Seoul for it's culture to vulture? Someone will say 'home'. I'll ask why. 'Sleep'^^.

D that's some great stuff. You're right hooked up!. I won't ask you, 'what's your hobby?'. I know, 'sleep'^^.
