how would I cut up an album that was downloaded as one track?

Personally I'd download Cooledit Pro 2.1 cracked version (using eMule). Install it, open the file and cut away.

I'm pretty old fashioned though, there's probably a better way by now.

I'd do the same. But use Audacity, instead. It's a great free program.

Just cut and export your clips from the main audio stream. Pretty easy. I do it when I backup audio cassettes.
