I'm just wondering if there are any German-speaking people in Korea (and if so, how difficult is it to find someone who can speak it).

I understand that it might even be difficult to find English-speaking people there, but I'm just curious.

I'm not in Korea yet, or certain where I might work, but I'd like to know, because learning German is sort of my hobby.

Yes there are. There used to be a German hagwon/school in Hannam-Dong. I just had coffee with a Korean gyopo from Germany who represents one of the famous Koreans abroad. She had some friends here who speak German.

Also, my friend is a fluent German speaker. She's Canadian.

A couple of good friends in Seoul were German, and there's a reasonably sized German business community there.

You'll come across a German speaker here or there. I know of a few in my town, and have been in touch with a few others in this province, and that's without even trying to find them.

There's a facebook group ("Deutsch in Seoul," or "Deutsch in Korea" or something like that) comprised of Koreans and non-German foreigners interested in improving their German. I think they do meet up with some Germans, too. So they have get togethers every once in a while.

Alles Gute.

Showoff! Laughing

I studied German quite a bit when I was at university--I loved reading Kafka in German, made the translations look like crap. But, I've practically lost my ability to communicate in German in the decade since I used to hang out with a few Germans I got acquainted with here in Korea.

It ain't showin' off if German is my native tongue, which it is. English is my second language, though, as my father is British, I've always been exposed to it.

Now you're being condescending. Laughing

I understood what you had written...I just was teasing you. Although I can't speak German very well anymore, I can still read it well enough.
