Just out of curiosity, how would you define a good education? Manners? University degree? Post-graduate study? Travel? Foreign languages? Autodidactic reading?

What are the defining attributes of an educated individual?

A good all round knowledge of most things that cannot be measured by bits of paper. I think etiquette is always a good parameter of an educated person. All the intelligent people I have ever known have always been polite.

Educated people tend to thrive with self improvment so ability with foreign languages is another good parameter.

I was at university (like the rest of you) and I met many a stupid person who if not for the class structure they were born in would have gone to work at Tesco aged 16. MAs, Phds etc etc - Bleh! Rolling Eyes

It depends.

It's all a matter of degree, if you'll excuse the pun.

I mean if someone studied a two year vocational course such as a HND in the UK in say radio programming, I'd say he was as educated as someone who has done a three yr BA. Someone with a PHD is educated to a higher level.... like I said, It's all just a matter fo degree but is essentially someone with a significant level of knowledge of a given subject.

One definition I hold of a well-educated person is someone who maintains the ability to continue learning past formal education.

That's a very good question and one which I've often thought of but brought no proper answer.

I think a lot to do with it is that if a person gains absolutely all of their social senses from workmates or on the sporting field and by doing so express naivety in any conversation of substance, then I'd strongly suggest that they haven't attended any form of higher learning and are uneducated.

But, if you can put in layman's terms some particular theory and they understand it, and add to it in a relevant and pertinent way, then I would say that they have a brain for education - even if it means they don't know the 'correct' terms inherent in the phenomena you are discussing.

Unmeasurable. No less, though, is the choice of friends. I'd say the later is a better measure. Plenty of uncurious educated folk.
