"As soon as they threw a cigarette butt down on the ground, Toby would jump on it and stamp on it, with stiff front paws held together, until the cigarette end was totally destroyed."

I think it can't be holding. Can someone fully explain this to me? I feel we could all benefit from a good answer to my question. Smile

Toby is right. Smoking stunts your growth and leads to a quickened and uncomfortable death.

Held.

You gotta blame the parents.

The sentence is in the past tense (not sure which one though) so here held is better.

You could edit it to use holding, like this....

As soon as they threw a cigarette butt down on the ground, Toby would jump on it and stamp on it, while holding his stiff paws together, until the cigarette end was totally destroyed."

either is fine because even though the sentence is past tense, that clause is present tense. held and holding are both fine. but it does need to be edited like it is above

Past tense using "would + verb" = used to do something regularly.

But is it Past Progressive, Past Continous, Past Perfect or Simple Past?

Are there more than these?
