I am getting insurance with AIG that suits my needs much better than
this horrible plan.

Is it possible to get out of it?

Has anyone else opted out of NHIC?

I don't think you can opt out. I had opted out until a couple of years ago when it became mandatory and I could no longer do so. Fortunately it's not too expensive. Tompatz can tell ya for sure.

Well, you are really not supposed to, but you can. It does happen. Your employer would be more than happy not to pay it. As you know, Korea enforcing the law is not so common. It is as common as rain in the Sahara Desert.

That's right. Your employer can try anything and get away with it if you don't put up a good enough fight.

Korea smells.

LEGALLY, you cannot opt out of the NHIC plan. It is LEGALLY required for ALL foreigners employed in Korea.

The only real hazard is that IF they decide to catch up to you - you WILL be held responsible for ALL the unpaid premiums (yours and your employers contributions) - backdated to your arrival in Korea.

The premiums are NOT that high and AIG is only supposed to cover what is above and beyond the NHIC insurance.

The risks are yours.

But what are the chances someone's goint to "catch up to you." None, really.

But this is Korea. You could complain to the health office that your boss isn't making or not making enough, payments and they'll try to evade your questioning. Then I guess it could turn right around and try to nab you for it. Maybe make you pay and not your boss/former boss. After, like I said, this is Korea.

Have had the same question.

Whether it is proof of insurance OR specifically NHIC that is required of all non-Koreans.

I have looked at I/nal expat insurance schemes that better suit my needs.

just get it, you wont notice the contributions unless you are alf garnet and would cross the street to buy 900 won ramen when it costs 1000 over the road.

korean health insurance was gold when they took out my appendix at short notice, and to opt out would be a bad move IMO as your other insurance should cover anything OVER the korean basic medi insurance as someone else here already said. if anything, the korean hospitals would have an easier time processing your state medi insurance than another companies one, as they can just punch your ID number into thier computer and bring up the insu details. good luck using your korean language skills to tell them you are insured through another company when they have to give you an emergency operation!

For me, too! NHIC saved me W2.2million for my emergency appendectomy.
