Would you boycott the olympics in China because of current (and not so current) events:
* China's threating posture towards Taiwan.
China recently passed a law that allowed the use of military force towards the "rogue" province should they declare independence.
* Recent anti-Japanese demonstrations targeting Japanese businesses and civilians.
the government isn't doing much to control these mobs and refuses to apologize.
* China's occupation and human rights abuses in Tibet. human rights violations in general.
* The EU reneging on the weapons sales ban to China ... just think of all the aircraft, missles, and cattle prods
they can buy with all the revenues from the olympics. |

At a demonstration outside the United Nations in New York, Psurbu Tsering of the Tibetan Association of New York and New Jersey
said its members received phone calls from Tibet claiming 70 people had been killed and 1,000 arrested.
The reports could not be "verified". |

Stars asked to join Beijing Olympic boycott
By Tom Leonard in New York and Richard Spencer in Beijing
Last Updated: 3:18am GMT 26/02/2008
Prominent figures in the entertainment industry who are involved in the staging of the Beijing Olympics have come under pressure to follow Steven Spielberg in cutting their links with the Games over China's policy on Darfur.
Spielberg, the Oscar-winning director of films such as the holocaust drama Schindler's List and Munich, about the terrorist killings of 11 Israeli athletes at the 1972 Games, withdrew from his unpaid position as artistic adviser to the opening and closing ceremonies in Beijing because of China's backing for the regime in Sudan.
...
Ang Lee, the Oscar-winning film director, and Quincy Jones, the American music impresario, are among those who will be targeted by activists trying to highlight Beijing's links with Sudan. Corporate sponsors also face the same treatment.

Non of things have anything to do with sport. Plus the part about Taiwan just shows a general ignorance and teenage simplification of what is a very complex issue.
China has problems as do other developing countries. But only double standards and childish hearsay are what gets aired about China in the mainstream press. All a boycott would do is to isolate China and push them further away from the international community and destroy any possible dialogue over things like human rights. For all their faults the Chinese governement is doing a lot of good. Life is getting better for a lot of people. You cannot compare Hu Jintao's China with Mao's or Burma or NK. Mao set China back 100 years and only now things are being turned around. Give them time. Alienating China for what is on the whole a huge pile of double standards and hypocrisy(our own countries are hardly whiter than white) would be disastrous. Mia Farrow sounds like a child when she talks about the 'genocide olympics' completely dismissing the complexity and longevity of the Darfur crisis and blaming it completely on China and their olympics. Keep politics away from sport.
If you want to read a more balanced view of China with proper three dimensional discussions by people who actually know about the country and didn't just pick up No Logo at What the Book last week check out the blog Danwei www.danwei.org but chances are you won't as getting angry about stuff is more fun. |

| We always talk about other countries destroying their culture, but we do it to ourselves. How much of our "culture" have we kept? Most of us prefer our lives to an Amish life, no? Why does everyone think that Tibetans won't either. China is wrong on many levels on how it does things, but the loss of Tibetan culture isn't really all that bad. It should be preserved by education and information, and every culture keeps a part of itself (sometimes good, sometimes bad, like confucianism in Korea). Every culture dies, and it's usually a good thing. We grow. Cultures that don't grow die. It's up to them , and it shouldn't be forced. But it also doesn't have to be preserved at all costs. I actually think it shouldn't. |

Oh yes, let's all pray that the native Tibetans are all watching Friends and talking about last night's Scrubs soon. After all, it's working out so well for us, isn't it? Every culture does not die - just those that get conquered by other, bigger, less polite cultures and then exposed to genecide and genetic diluting via population relocation.
You say that it's up to them if their culture dies...?! Did... did you entirely miss the point of the Tibet issue? They.. don't.. have.. a.. choice. Right? Because they were conquered..? (Remember?) |

Before China came in, Tibetans were peaceful unicorn herders who loved nothing more than harvesting their crops of gumdrops and sunshine.
Free Tibet! (so it can go back to civil wars, oppressive theocracy, and foreign invasion).
I can't believe I'm replying to a thread started by this loon. |

Sometimes I read through this site and think "man, how the hell do these people even function?" Very troubling to know how many of us here are entrusted with teaching and caring for children.
You could make a case for boycotting Olympics held all across the world. You gonna boycot the 2012 Yeosu Expo because of the treatment of North Korean refugees? You gonna boycott the 2010 Shanghai Expo because of Tibet and Taiwan? You gonna boycott the London Olympics because of their legacy of colonialism and terror? You gonna boycott the Vancouver Olympics because of Todd Bertuzzi? Hell, you could make the case for barring athletes from unfriendly nations from competing. Get rid of the Afghanis, the Israelis, the Iraqis, the Saudis, the Russians, and the Americans.
The Olympics isn't supposed to be about politics. You can't make an exception for one country without applying those standards to all of them.
Now go back to the current events forum where nobody has to see you. |

Do you mean boycott as in not go. Done with China, not a chance I will go.
Or do you mean boycott as in not watch it on TV. Sorry, will watch some of it for sure. |

Why didn't anyone boycott the Atlanta Olympics since the USA illegally overtook Hawaii?
If there is ever a war between China and Taiwan, Taiwan will instigate it. |

I don't want to speak anymore about this because it is silly but do people know that Taiwan has never officially split from China. Not saying that the PRC should march in there tomorrow and steal all their bubble tea but the situation is no way comparable to Tibet. |
