I went back to the U.S. in February for a few weeks. While I was there, I thought I'd check at the local retailer to see if they had any Wiis. Given that they had been out for over a year, and that the holiday season was over, I was not at all surprised to hear the salesperson say that they did indeed have them in stock.
So, I turned on my heel and left, to mull the decision to get one or not. (Read: figure out how to pitch the idea to the wife.)
I ended up borrowing a friend's Wii and the wife and I played Guitar Hero 3, which pretty much had her hooked instantly, so after a few days of playing that we decided to get one. So I went back to the store, asked if they had any Wiis in stock (same salesman) and was very surprised to find out they didn't have any. So I asked when they would be getting some, and he said they never knew. I asked when the last time they had gotten any and it was 6 weeks previous to the first time I had asked (apparently they'd gotten a shipment on that day.)
So, at this point, I was totally clued in. The salesman must have thought I was a complete moron on that first day when he told me they were in stock and I just turned around and left. I scoured the internet and found that they were selling on ebay for $400 or more.
Anyway, I kept checking back and they eventually got 3 in a week later and I got the second one.
(This story was prompted by the guy in buy and sell who can't sell his wii for less than market price. I find that situation amusing after seeing firsthand the demand for these things in the U.S.) |
