Has anyone started renegotiating yet? I want to get doing mine soon because I might have an alternative job offer I'm interested in.

How far ahead to people usually bring this up with their school. I have a good relationship with my school and I think they would want me to stay. How flexible are public schools in their negotiations?

It depends on your school. If you are with SMOE there is next to no negotiation. Your contract is with SMOE, not with your school's principal.

If you are with GEPIK/EPIK you may be able to work something out with yoru principal. Like I said, its up to your school.

If you have a good relationship with your school and they want you back, then I don't see why they would refuse any reasonable request. Just make sure you tell them WHY you deserve something. Make a case.

I started late August and my ps has already asked me to re-sign with them twice already. My friend started October and she has been told she must given an answer by May. It really depends on how desperate your school is. I am in a rural area so NT are hard to come by. My friend is in a big city, but the previous NT quit mid contract.

It is possible to renegotiate now if you're willing to stay. Koreans liek to leave most things to the last minute, but if you're considered an asset to them then they won't hestitate to negotiate now.

I think I'll wait to see if I get the job after I'm after and then go to my co teacher and talk about it.

I want to earn more next year and so I need to ask that I have permission to find part time evening work as well as a few other things. I think they'll give it me if I have another job lined up. If not then I'll probably be off...

I re-negotiated on Monday, changes made and signed on Tuesday for my EPIK contract. My contract was meant to have finished at the end of June.

*Christmas week and the next week off so I can fly home for christmas. Then I have a full two months off as well after that anyway.
*No changing any of my three schools.
*I get two weeks renewal holiday in June. Mid term but they Ok'd it. GEPIK contracts state that you can't take this if it interferes with school, EPIK doesn't.

The pay scale was changed so I didn't get the 100 000 won increase that most get. The increase was only 50 000 won. But that's no problem

Sounds good. What do you mean by "no changing any of my 3 schools?"...

My current over time rate is only 20,000 won (1st year). What do people usually go for when they re-negotiate?

I just re-signed this week. I only had three conditions:

1. Instead of an extra 100,000 / month, I wanted the entire sum for the year up front (minus taxes, which came out to 1m won) .

2. That the vacation days and camp schedule I had last year will remain the same (3 weeks off in summer and 6 weeks off in winter / 1.5 hour camp class per day for 2 weeks each term).

3. My teaching load (18 hours) will not increase unless I opt for an after-school class.

Believe it or not, the toughest thing to get was #2! Shocked

My contract is up the end of May.

With EPIK, at the end of the school year they move teachers around. I've always worked at the same two middle schools and one elementary for the last year. The fourth school that I taught at before Christmas has been juggled between a few elementaries. In March they stopped sending me to four and I just teach at my three. I'm very happy at them, I have an excellent relationship with all my Ps, VPs and co-teachers at those schools. To me it's not beneficial to keep chopping and changing. I know all of my 450 students individually now, i understand them and they understand me, moving schools means that you have to take the first three or four months getting used to the new lot. Not moving is an important one for me.

So Dome, have I got this right, you got an extra 100,000 pay rise from EPIK + you negotiated an additional 50,000 from your school?

Any uppage on your OT payments?

From what you signed BS, the old level for you as it was for me was level 2. BA + CELTA. The base salary was 2.2 and there was a 100 000 rural area and 100 000 for remote area bonus (RAB) in an eub or myon for me. So I was getting 2.4.

Kinda difficult to explain but I'll try.

*When I signed my level 2 got me 2.4. I signed June '07.

*Shortly after they scrapped 2+ and the levels redone. A level 2 basic was 2.0 with a rural bonus of 100 000 won and RAB of 200 000 won. Totalling 2.3.

*Since Jan '08 the level 2+ has been reinstated. The basic level 2 gets 2.1 million with a rural bonus of 100 000 won. A level 2+ gets 2.2 with the rural bonus of 100 000 won. BUT they've scrapped the RAB. Instead they've introduced a 50 000 won bonus for each school that you teach at. I teach at 3 schools so that's an extra 150 000 on top of the rural bonus 100 000 and my basic 2.2.

To be honest I'm not that bothered, as long as there was no pay drop I wasn't too bothered, I like my schools and I get three months vacation so it's no hassle.

Actually I realised that I haven't actually answered your question at all there BS. Shit! This is common for all EPIK schools. Not sure about your's because one is semi-private. My friend has the same but her salary and contract is with the Office of Education so she negotiates with them. As I did. My salary has nothing to do with the principals at my schools. I think it's the case of discussing with the supervisor, they can ok it all. I know yours is up soon, they seem nice about negotiating, so I doubt your return flight thing/siberian express thing will be a problem. The thing is to make sure your co-teacher knows all your questions and queries for negotiating and then it's easy.

Actually looking at it, you'll get a base, 2.2 and and extra 100 000 won for rural bonus and you're at two schools so that's an extra 100 000. So you'll be 2.4. WHich is a 100 000 increase, is that right?

Holy crap! Overtired! No uppage on overtime, 20 000 is fine. No bothered about that. Other Korean teachers get 20 000, don't see why I should be treated any differently.

Overtime is 30,000 at my school for both me and all the Korean teachers. My principal said he didn't agree with my contract's stipulation of 10,000 less. He's a real stand-up man.
