Just curious about expat teachers in Korea who send child support payments to the USA. What's the standard percentage of one's salary you should send for one child? How do you work visitations, etc.? I know this is kind of a touchy subject, but just looking for general feedback. I've heard it's 10-15% of salary in most states.

Thanks ... I've heard all kinds of things thus far. I'm suprised there aren't more teachers in the ROK with a child back in their home countries to support. Maybe they just aren't paying up and on the run.  Does Canada have a similar system to the American one for child support? |

| I'd have to be very unlucky to have offspring with as often as I've gotten laid. I think that explains why a LOT of people here don't. Man have you seen Itaewon at 3:00am? Those people are paying for it. |

I guess I'm more curious about teachers who have had a child back home and ended their relationship or gotten a divorce and moved to Korea and how they manage child support/ visitation with being an expat -- or vice versa (have a child in Korea and return back to their home countries). I know the Korean system of divorce is completely different than the West, so I don't know how much this applies.
A friend of mine was married for 5 years in the Seattle area, had a daughter, but was deeply unhappy and got divorced. A year or so later, he moved to Seoul to teach (he was a teacher in Seattle but hated it), has partial custody of his daughter who remains with the mother in Seattle, sends $400 a month to his ex-wife, and enjoys seeing his daughter for a couple of months every summer. |

I agree. You know better what living conditions your ex and child are in. Send them what they need to live healthily. |

I agree. You know better what living conditions your ex and child are in. Send them what they need to live healthily. |
While I agree with this, not all mothers are very responsible in the way they dispose of their child support payments. |

| It is a matter of living with yourself. If you are here in Korea and your kid is in another country ,then that means you never see the kid. If you can't do a reasonable job as a parent (that means being there for your kid) then the least you can do is send enough money. It is not important if the wife is responsible or not...you have a duty to send the money to your kid. Someday the kid will judge you and it would be nice to have something to say that makes you look less like a piece of garbage. |

| If you make in the 40-50 K range, expect to pay at least $1000/ mo for two kids. Lower income people tend to pay $300-400/mo for one kid.... in my state....but there are several factors that the judge considers when determining CS |
