Garak market is quite a ways away from Jamsil ... If you're talkig about Jamsil, I lived there about 3 years ago.
Quite nice.
Big park (Olympic) nearby.
Big shopping malls nearby. (Lotte and Coex)
A tonne of restaurants, bars, nightclubs. Mostly Korean, but you can also find American places.
About 30-40 minutes from Itaewon, Hongdae.
About 12-15 minutes from Gangnam.
Not as dirty as some parts of Seoul.
Overall, a great place to live.
Garak market is about 20-30 minutes away from Jamsil. Very residential. Very dull. |

I'll have to somewaht disagree with Newbie. I live in this area right now. The only good thing about this area is that it is right down the street from Lotte Department store and the Lush store. And Lotte World. And the Olympic Park...but it's too darn cold to care about a park right now.
But Coex is pretty darn far, as well as Gangnam, Shinsa, Apgujeong/Cheongdam/Hongdae. That's where all the so-called good bars and clubs are. The Jamshil area is close to Bangi market. This area is nothing but old ajosshi places...nothing to dance about IMO. |

It's fairly clean and it's not too bad, store and restaurant-wise, though there's not much to do unless you go about 15-30 min. out to Gangnam/Apgu. |

Great area to live in I reckon. Relatively close to spots such as itaewon and gangnam for when occasion calls. Not too long on the subway to hongdae. The parks along the river are great especially in summer when pools open. personally I love going out drinking in Sincheon ( not to be confused with similiar sounding place beside hongdae), always seem to have fun there, meeting lots of cool people. Have been to lotte world probably a bit too much though.... |

Speaking of pools, am I going to be hassled for having tattoos? I kind of figure I am. I just wonder to what extent. |

I've never been hassled... the odd old chap slapping me on the arm and saying, "whaaaaa"...but no real hassles. |

Sounds like you're thinking about it too much. Most of Seoul is very similar. There are some areas with some individuality, but most of them are nothing special anyway.
Nothing anybody says is going to give you a feel for the place anyway if you've never been to Seoul/Korea before (which I'm assuming from your questions/join date, sorry if I'm wrong).
The school is more important. Just come here with an open mind, and you'll probably end up enjoying any area.
In my first year I lived in an area relatively far away from anything, but still in Seoul. Now I'm 10 minutes wak from Gangnam station and there's not much difference, except that I pay more for less of everything. |

True dat... and really, geograpghically, Seoul is much smaller than it looks on subway maps. Easy to get around and find a different neighborhood. |
