I am wondering how feasible it would be to travel Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky to see the volcanos and mystique of the Kamchatka Peninsula once I am in South Korea. It sounds like such a cool destination, but I hardly see any commentary on it.
Has anyone been there lately or does anyone have any suggestions about making this trip? Also, is Magadan an interesting place to visit?

Yes, I soviet_man have been there.

Petropavlovsk is not as cold as Vladivostok, but it is a maritime climate. I remember the distinct smell of a lot of smoke, burning wood and fish.

But it is worth the trip as the surrounding areas are rich in environmental wilderness.

Buying a ticket to Petropavlovsk ex-Seoul is fairly straightforward. Only Russian carriers go there and there are generally no direct international flights. I would suggest go to the office of: Sakhalin Airlines, Vladivostok Airlines, Dalavia or S7 Airlines (which all have offices in Seoul) and buy a ticket through them, preferably from a Russian speaker who understands what they are doing.

Amadeus.net can give you timetables of flights, there are only a few each day.

The normal Russian visa rules apply. There are only a few hotels to select from and prices are on the high side. It may be possible to book a hotel via the airline office.

Thanks soviet_man! Wow, you really know a lot about travelling to Petropavlovsk. It sounds like a pretty rigorous ambition, visiting the Kamchatka Peninsula, especially if you don't speak Russian. Maybe it would be better to go there with an organized group. I wonder if it's the kind of place where bears hunt people down who are wandering about aimlessly. I was just captivated by how wild and majestic it looks in photographs with all of the volcanos and taiga type landscapes.
Thanks again for your most generous insight and helpfulness. You definitely live up to your screen name on here with your knowledge on Russian matters. Smile
