Computer moron here - I have about a mil to spend on a new PC.

I have been using an ancient PC that a friend gave me - it has finally died.

What kind of rig would a mil get me? I want something that looks cool and is functional. I am not a big gamer.

A million won would get you into a pretty high end machine.

It would be almost cutting edge if your price does not include the monitor.

800k will get you a basic quad-core (Q6600) machine with 2 gigs RAM, higher end video card (pick your favorite brand), 500 gig HDD and DVD burner.

That still leaves 200k for your monitor (think 19-22" wide screen LCD).

200k will get you an entry level dual core machine. *

500k gets a nice, mid range machine. *

* = monitor not included.

What do you want to use it for?

I'd get one of the fastest dual core CPUs, at least 2GB RAM and 250GB hard drive. Go for a 22 inch monitor or even 24 if you don't need a monster of a machine. You will enjoy your computer twice as much on a huge beautiful monitor. If you're getting vista get an 8600 or better video card just to be safe.

If you like computer gaming or think you might then get an 8800GT, or better yet an 8800GTX, (but never GS)

If you want to download a lot of music and movies get at least a 500GB hard drive.

If you want to do video editing or similar get a big hard drive and a quad core cpu.

If you like to run a crapload of programs at the same time you might as well get 4gb of RAM.

I think that's my main list of "if you" .. "you should" stuff.

If I was spending 1mill tomorrow I would get.....

CPU.........Q6600 (overclocked, it wipes out the competition)..236,000

GPU.........HD3870 or 8800GT or 9600GT....all three offer similar performance and can be had from 190,000-250,000. Of the three, if you can get an 8800GT for less than 230,000....that's the best deal.

Motherboard..........Any Gigabyte mobo around 120,000 which supports 45nm CPU's. Make sure it has an up-to-date BIOS if you want to use a 45nm CPU e.g. E8200/E8400. Gigabyte boards have never let me down. Asus have.

PSU.......The Zalman 600w ZM-600-HP is a fantastic deal at 110,000.

RAM.........2x2GB's of PC2-6400 by OCZ, Geil, G-skill....100,000....you'll probably end up getting G-skill if you go to Yongsan. Tons of that stuff there................................. You might even find PC2-8500 RAM.....you might not need such fast RAM though.

Whoops, almost forgot hard drive........all the brands are good these days....500GB for 110,000.

That's around 900,000 so you've 100,000 left for CPU cooler, speakers, keybd/mouse, case.......whatever.

I actually saw a really cutting edge PC for sale in the Buy and Sell section last week. I think it was a P4D overclocked with some flashing lights on the case and a big but old/slow LCD.

Maybe you should check that rig out to see what 950k really gets you.
