Women face bias worldwide - UN
The report says that 70% of the world's poor are women
Women are discriminated against in almost every country around the world, a UN-commissioned report says.
It says that this is despite the fact that 185 UN member states pledged to outlaw laws favouring men by 2005.
It adds that 70% of the world's poor are women and they own just 1% of the world's titled land.
The report, which was prepared for UN Human Right Commissioner Louise Arbour, says rape within marriage has still not been made a crime in 53 nations.
'Life-long violation'
The report was compiled by Fareda Banda, a law professor at London's School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS).
At a news conference in Geneva, Prof Banda said that other laws discriminating women included statutes on divorce, maternity benefits and pensions.

Sorry, Adventurer, but this isn't really news; sadly, it's been well known for decades. The UN report merely reconfirms the obvious.
I've seen firsthand sexism beating a hasty retreat in China and its Hong Kong SAR but hardly in Korea and Japan.
And we all know the Middle East and North Africa is a basketcase thanks to Islamic zealotry, although our resident liberated chick insists on overlooking this sore point.
I've always said, the world would be a far better place if more women held positions of power.
P.S. Could you please set articles in quotes so they're easier to notice? |

What are you talking about? You probably don't even know yourself, do you... When have I insisted on overlooking gender inequality in the Arab world? Please do tell. |

Big Bird, have you discussed women's rights in the region? You do discuss the region on other issues, but I don't know if this issue comes up with you or not. Is that you think Steve is saying? Steve, have you discussed China and women's rights before as well? |

Whenever I've discussed the region, it's generally been with regard to the Middle East Conflict, or the recent war in Lebanon. How does this relate to women's rights? Am I supposed to say stuff like:
"The occupation is about territory and resources, not security, but by the way, Palestinian women have not yet acheived equality."
"Deliberately littering civillian areas with millions of clusterbombs (even as the end of the war had already been negotiated) which will continue to kill and maim innocents (very often children) for decades to come, was a shocking and dispicable war crime, however, Lebanese women have not yet been fully emancipated."
"The deliberate targetting of innocents, often children, by members of the IDF, is shockingly under-reported in the US media, and is rarely properly investigated by Israeli authorities, and apparantly (according to Israeli journalists) never punished, yet Arab women do not yet enjoy the same freedoms as their menfolk."
Should I also mention that the earth revolves around the sun and that Arabs in the Middle East tend to speak Arabic as a first language? What other information should I also be obligated to provide when I discuss the ME conflict? |

You don't need to discuss astronomy. But closer to home you haven't once in recent memory posted a thread or responded at length and with great indignation to the glaring reality of gender discrimination in the Arab world.
And that's what I find quite revealing. |
