Hi, maybe this is a question that gyopo's could help me out with.

Right now, I'm living in the US but need to move to Korea next year. Unfortunately this probably means that I will be drafted into the army.

I was wondering if anyone knows how to get exempt from this or at least not get drafted into the army, because I heard that if you have certain health conditions or disabilities, you don't have to serve in the army - you can work somewhere, or have a shortened term (like a month or year, instead of 26 months).

I heard someone who spoke English could work somewhere to fulfill the military obligation, but am not sure if there is any truth to this.

Any help from someone who may have gone through the same thing would be greatly appreciated!!!

I can't remember the naturalisation laws over there.

As an Australian citizen, I don't have anything to do with the military in Korea.

And yes, your proficiency in English can be a determining factor in regards to your post. There are such a wide range of roles, from grunts and so forth through to administration. I'm sure there are ways to state your case, but I'm really not sure on the semantics.

Talk to your Korean consulate for the best advice.

Just heard from my Korean friend, you can try to get a job at a company that is sponsered by the government and exempts your military service if you work at one.

What companies qualify is definately beyond me.

Are you a Korean citizen? Or a U.S. citizen?

Is it really that difficult to write 'you' instead of 'u'?

I have many. Your point is somewhat dulled and your quip was weak.

Me? That wasn't a quip, that was an answer to the OP. Tattoos exempt people from military service.

Shut-up. And yes it is. 3 times harder infact.

And to answer the question. Tattoo was my suggestion too. A lot of Koreans went out and tried this in the past year and had problems. They are charged with a kinda fraud. But since you're coming in from the U.S. I don't think you'll have problems if you go that route. By the way the tattoo must be either big or in a easy to see place. Koreans think only gangsters get tattoos, thus the big craze by the military here about them.

I have a friend who's doing that as well. Not sure what the exact requirements are, but I believe that the company has to be involved in manufacturing military equipment or the like.
