I can't believe I've been here for two years and haven't done the sauna thing for anything but sleeping in. But I finally did the bath house thing. Oh my god these places rock! |

They're awesome once every few weeks to get all the older skin off and feel golden for a few days, but I never go more often than that. |

Hmmm, I think I voted wrong on the poll...my apologies Saunas are THE best thing in Korea. I have my little ajeoma bucket next to the door with a scrub towel, face mask, shampoo, etc.
Actually, I find the most peaceful place in Korea to be the saunas...even though I'm nekkid. I try so hard to get other foreign girls to go with me but they shake their head vehemently saying "I'll never try one of those" I think most people are afraid that they are too fat or don't want to be stared at. There are sooo many older women and women of all size and shapes. No one has ever laughed at me or stared me up and down (I have heard that there is a little bit of this in the men's saunas with the foreign dudes) In fact, the best way to avoid being talked to by Koreans has been going to the saunas!! I feel more comfortable being around Koreans in Saunas than I do walking down the street! My Korean boyfriend calls me a "Sauna Geeshan" (which means "Sauna Ghost")
It's heaven and it is especially great when you have a crap day at work. I'm fighting a bit of a cold right now...so I'm going to the sauna now....bye! |

They're okay, but I'll never go in my current town. It's a pretty small place, but I teach around a thousand students, so it's not all that unlikely that I'd run into one of them.
I'm sorry, but there is no part of my universe where it's okay for me to see a student naked, never mind for them to see me. |

Saunas, mogyuktangs, jimjilbangs...they rank right near the top of my list of experiences that feel uniquely Korean. I even sourced out an authentic Korean one in Manila, with Korean writing and everything. Except they had Filipino attendant girls walking around the men's sauna, which surprised the hell out of me. Until I remembered where I really was. |

You know those plastic baskets women tote their scrub pads, soap bottles and so on back and forth to the sauna with (this is a newbie story). When I first arrived a woman told me this was ladies going back and forth to the sauna. I said, 'really, and I thought, 'wow, there are so many cleaning ladies in Korea'' (housemaids). The woman (K teacher) I was talking to was right cracked up about that. |

Ditto. I get satisfactorily clean at home in the shower. And, there, nobody's staring, checking out my tackle.
Usually.

I love them! I'm a regular at the one down the street (get 30 cupons for 130,000 won!). I spend lots of time in them watching movies, reading books, drinking o-mi ja cha, eating in the shikdang, swimming the dog paddle in the cold pool, soaking in the hot tub, sweating in the hot cave, getting ex-foliated, massaged, sleeping, etc. One of my favorite things to do in Korea. |

LOVE EM!
I am not perfect bod by any means but I love them. Yeah I get clean at home but there you can slop water all over the place ...woo hoo I don't have to clean it up. Can do the leg shave much easier! (I have korean style shower at home.) Bob around in the green tea bath like a human mandu...then steam up a bit and if I feel like cardiac arrest go to the cold pool......nipply in that one.
Then go upstairs to the dry sauna room and sweat....and wait for my muscles to turn to rubber...! Then it's the cold refrigerator room. Do that a few times and if I want hell I can get a facial or massage or have a decent lunch at the restuarant...or watch korean t.v. and if I just can't stand it I can go to the little p.c. bang and sign on to dave's.
Yep, I love em....I try to drag everyone I know to them. They are relaxing and cheap. Worst thing that ever happened was one of my students mother's worked at one of the local jimjilbangs and I was walking up the stairs bare-arsed naked and she said "oh Hello Miss *******! My son he is in your class! He likes you very much...All as I am standing there naked as the day I was born.
Once in awhile I see my students but they bow and scutlle off in fits of giggles as their english teacher is in pink shorts and a pink tee shirt. But they are teenage boys ...if they see me they usually want me to spring for a soda or something. But other than that I leave them alone and they leave me alone.
But I have been here forever (going on my 4th year same school) and have taught some of their brothers so I am just the weird english teacher. It's the nice part of being recognized as part of the community.
Can ya tell I likes em!
