You left out the option: To boldly go where no Charisma Man has gone before - and to get tips on how to score some of that fiiiine Korean tail we keep hearing about.

Seriously, all about is, especiallyin this place, The Forces of Darkness gather - the warmongers, the bigots, the conspiracy nuts, the vegans - and we must be ever vigilant. Me must. The fate of Western Civilization rests in our hands, right here the CE Forum of Dave's Cafe.

It's true. I'd never kid around about something like this.

I thought that I was here for the Bobster's free beer as long as it is not Cass? And also on top of that a successful explanation on using the URL function. I got it, Bob! Seriously, debating, growing, showing restraint, trying to see what the other person has to say without blowing up, that's what I think it's all about! It certainly isn't about putting your right foot here or there and doing the hoky poky and say at the end "That's what it's all about!"

Actually, I am serious.

Does anyone feel they gain anything from the CE forum other than the strengthening of their own positions?

As Tiger Beer (my new bestest friend) said in another thread, Current Events is a pretty good place to keep updated for news. Its less hassle than an aggregator (peel recommended google aggregator to me, but I hated it).

Look, the forum does force me to argue my points articulately and justify them. I don't think it radically changes my opinions, but neither can I say my positions would change radically in discussion with people IRL.

This may surprise you, but I find CE to be a nice outlet that's educational as well. There are some good people here.

It's a fairly good place to pick up random bits of information, but I'd bet it's a rare day in East Asia that anyone actually gets an opinion changed. Opinions are based on personality and value structure, and those don't change much.

I failed! I didn't get you to change your opinions, rats! I am feeling like Stewart in Family Guy at this moment:) Anyone like that show. I think I, maybe, moderated my views slightly which is good, though some may consider my views to be in the centre. I definitely find out stuff about different places in the world whether it's Turkey, Tibet, learn more about the labrynthine primary system for the democratic party, and I get free beer from the bobster and learn how to use the URL function. You weren't expecting the re-invention of the wheel? Anyway, if someone changed their opinions slightly or moderated themselves, their ego wouldn't really want them to admit that. It would be viewed as a sign weakness for some, but I think it's a sign of strength.

My answer: I enjoy discussing contemporary and historical politics. That is about it.

I try to have rational conversations. I learn a bunch of stuff, and hopefully enlighten some others, too.

I'm with Kuros, seriously. It's a good place to hear about things, a gtood place to hear ideas I wouldn't come up with on my own, and the few times I found my opinions ion a small state of flux it was because I found I was about to say something I had no idea how to argue and make a case for rationally and coherently.

Actually was a time, long ago, I felt so passionately against the Iraq war I was somewhat obsessed about coming hee and chasing down anyone in favor of it - I'm passionate in the same way, still, but now that most of the people back home have come around to what I was saying, there's less urgency about it.

And Adventurer, congrats on getting the URL thing down, but dude ... Cass? Breathe not this syllable in my presence, not even for the briefest of moments. (shudders)

Bobster, I sometimes scratch my head as to how some foreigners like Cass which I think of as Gas:) I feel like I am going to float away like some helium balloon if I drink that stuff. It reminds me of the cheap beer I had in college when I lived in the US, and we were short on money. I think Schlitz was better than this stuff. Of course, the locals love it, I guess? I can't fault them, people are used to their own tastes when it comes to beer, but I have met Koreans who don't like it.
Have you ever had Samuel Adams? Sam Adams really rocks.
It's my favorite American beer. Canadian beers are usually pretty good.

I think many members of the forum over here get to learn about different parts of the world. Many people have travelled to various parts of the world and lived there whether it's Indonesia, Singapore, Japan, Israel,
Kuwait, Canada, the US, Britain, France, India etc.... People have different perspectives. You can also see things in a way that the media won't necesssarily have you see in a short time frame on TV. For example, I think Kuros or someone else, perhaps, gave us some more insight into Turkish politics since he lived there. You have people explaining the American political process to Aussies who need a beer and reading several posts to get an idea:) *just kidding*
