Why is it that Koreans can't seem to grasp the most simple concepts? Are these things so hard to comprehend?

1) My family is more important to me than ANY job ever has been, is or will be.

2) My closest friends ARE part of my family to me so #1 applies for them also.

3) This is NOT the only school in Korea! There are more positions than teachers! I CAN GO SOMEWHERE ELSE!!!

4) Between me leaving and being replaced on July 11 and Courtney leaving and being replaced August 19 there are FOUR PLANE RIDES involved. What the *beep* difference does it make if I am on two of them or only one? Its not a double benefit.

I swear I am so pissed off over this I am seriously reconsidering if I would even agree should they wise up and make the offer. This level of pig headed stupidity is frightening in a group of people acting as EDUCATORS!

I need a beer...

Mod Edit: We have no problem with the venting, but a better choice of subject titles is in order to ensure that the thread doesn't go overboard, otherwise we pull the thread.

Was this like a personal message you were writing but somehow posted it by mistake?

That would be funny if so.

If not, it's still funny. I hereby nominate this for the Worst Post of 2008 Awards. Mods, make it a sticky.

And I disagree with your last point. You don't need any more beer.

Can you clarify what you mean in point four? Why would you be on two flights? And, surely if you were on two flights, that would be a benefit?

Just curious, but are you under the age of 25? There has been a lot of news recently about how the U.S. corporate personnel market and companies are dealing with the 'ME' generation.

This is the generation brought up playing on teams where people don't keep score, and where everyone gets a trophy for playing. The younger generation, predominantly brought up in single-parent families, where kids spent a load of time in paid or corporate day care, and then were spoiled by a set of separated families.

Personal life, friends, and 'living' for this generation, or so the info goes, take a front seat over career and dedication to work. I have to work Saturday? Uh, no, I have to go rock climbing with Betty. I quit!

If you place THAT much emphasis on your family and friends, you'll have a really tough time of it here in Korea. There has been no 'ME' generation here, and even the younger generation, which is by far more individualistic, knows that it takes sacrifice and putting up with b.s. to get ahead.

So to the OP, I say do your year and leave. You're not cut out to work overseas. Nothing to be ashamed about. Your boss isn't thick, he's Korean. Oh, and by the way...this is Korea.

Ok, sorry everyone... this was angry venting post that DOES need some back story. My contract is up in July, one of my coworker's is up about 6 weeks later. Having done my year I want to spend some time at home before returning so I said hire someone when I leave and I will come back when she leaves. Also since its in my contract that when I am done they fly me home and if I don't extend they have to fly someone else out, I told them I would need a roundtrip ticket. They said no, you can't be gone that long and no, if you extend you don't get the plane ticket. They called it a double benefit. If I leave in July they are paying for four plane rides: 1) me home 2) my replacement 3) coworker home in August 4) coworker's replacement in August. Whether I am on the last flight and come back to work for them makes NO DIFFERENCE financially to them. Well that's not true... If they buy the round-trip ticket they will save about 40% over two separate one-way flights. At least that's what Travelocity shows.

So, their offer is to PAY me to take an extra week off around the July break where in everyone else is working harder and at some point they will have to hire a very expensive sub rather. (Note: if they replace me in July and let me come back when the other teacher leaves there is no PTO and nobody has to work extra to cover my classes.) They offered $500 to a plane ticket and acted like they were being oh so generous when they did. So you're telling me that even in Korean it makes sense to say if you leave you get this benefit but if you stay you don't? If that is a genuine Korean ideal then maybe I really DON'T understand this place. I can almost understand their argument of "the mommies will be mad." but don't understand why you can't just say, "His contracted ended and he went home. We liked him so we hired him back for when the other teacher left." And for the snide comments about 'they must not like you very much,' let me be the first to say it. I guess they don't.

To PRagic: I understand your post given the available information but I am 31 and I do NOT consider myself part of the ME generation and this has nothing to do with not being able to go hiking one Saturday. That said, if you really do place a job over the people in your life you depend on, who's gonna be there for you when the job lets you down?

OP, why go to another position? You state that 'koreans' can't grasp simple concepts. So won't it be the same? My god, the supidity of your arguement.

Spare me the amateur psychology. Every succesive generation has said this forever. The "me" generation? Wasn't that the boomers? Or Generation X? Now it's the millenials. I was born in 80 so I'm not technically part of this "generation" but I think these characterizations make for easy shallow Newsweek leads but have no real substance.

OP,

I left the hogwan world with the same frustrations. Koreans give lip service to the idea that family is SOOOOO important, yet the reality of how they live is FAR from this...and certainly a hogwan owner could care less if you EVER see your family, especially if it inconveniences him in any way.

I decided to quit working in hogwans after 3 consecutive jobs of being lied to/deceived about about vacations. I was told I would have 10 days of vacation (woo hoo!). One hogwan owner found creative ways to deduct from this total (the hogwan is closed and it's not a national holiday, we must subtract 1 vacation day from your total!), thus leaving me with 4 actual consecutive vacation days!

Another hogwan owner told me i would have a week in the summer and a week in the winter, which turned out to be 5 day blocks which were scheduled on Wed, Thur, Fri, Mon, Tues, so that instead of having the 5 days surrounded by 2 weekends, we had only 1 weekend!

I didn't care about travelling and having extended vacations, I just wanted to have a hogwan that would allow me to VISIT MY FAMILY every year without having to take several weeks of unpaid leave or to go through the hassle of getting a new job every year!!!

So I took a paycut and tried a public school job specifically so i could spend quality time with family and friends back home (an individual school district that doesn't use EPIK or GEPIK). I couldn't be happier. Last winter vacation i went home for a MONTH, fully paid.

Don't go back to that shitty hogwan that only sees you as a commodity to be sold. You can do better.
