|
|
Is it me, or are GPU prices in Korea - at least for high-end models - insane?
They are nowhere near - remotely near - Newgg prices from what I can see.
9800Gx2 is going for ~820,000 + VAT
8800GTX is around 560,000 + VAT
8800GTS is around 370,000 + VAT
(BTW how much is VAT?)
I'm upgrading to play Crysis with some buddies. I cleared out the change drawers from the last 5 years and it totalled up to 1.1 million lol
So I have some "free money". But still - is it normal for GPUs to be that pricey here? Is it better to order from the states somehow? What about customs, damage & returns, delays, etc... Anyone managed to order from the US?
Anyone know places in Korea with better prices than this?
I basically need about the equivalent of 2 x 8800 GTS G92 512 MB power. But I have a ATI board so I can't SLI unless I use the 9800Gx2. OTOH if buying a new board and 2 lower end nVidia cards is net cheaper than the 9800Gx2 I'd do that.
Anyplace in Korea to *conveniently* trade in older Mobos and GPUs for even chump change cash? I have two 1950XTX GPUs. |

I don't know what site you checked but the prices you quoted above are a bit high. And tax is included in the price so you don't have to calculate +VAT.
9800GX2 starts at 725,000
8800GTX starts at 515,000
8800GTS starts at 189,000
And remember, tax is already included in the price. |

OP is right though. GPU's in Korea tend to run at least 10% more expensive than in the States. Especially higher end ones.
A quick check shows that Newegg is selling an MSI 8800GT for 210usd plus a game plus a 30 dollar mail-in rebate.
The best price for that card in Yongsan is 236,000. 242 dollars. Bundled with nothing. No rebate of course.
Electronics shopping in Korea is an exercise in getting jacked. |

I agree with OP...
Computers aren't really cheap here UNLESS you buy Korean parts which are pretty crappy and underperforming.
If you want high performance high quality parts, you're going to pay up the nose... |

Unclear how Danawa works and don't have a Korean translator to help me.
Anywhere in Yongsan I could go and get a 9800Gx2 for the same prices?
Would these be Gray Market purchases with no warranty? |

Danawa lists the prices for all of the stores in Yongsan.
You click the item you want, then it will bring up a list of all the stores that sell that item and the prices. You find one that has a price you like and click on it to get to their website. From there, you can order it or find where the store is so you can go and buy it.
Most times, you could try just going to a store in Son-In Plaza with a printout and they might match the lowest price or get close to it even if they don't sell it themselves. They'll get it for you.

So those are the prices (the ones on Danawa) I can get at Yongsan and those will be legitimate vendors - not grey market - who have one-year warranties etc....
cool. |

If you have a problem with whatever you buy in Yongsan then you're expected to take it to the A/S center of the manufacturer. Which will inevitably be in Yongsan.
The vendor will usually not help you any more than direct you to the A/S center.
My experience of Yongsan A/S centers has been pretty good actually. They will test whatever you bring them and tell you within 10 mins if it's actually broken or not. If broken, they will fix or replace it within a few days. |
