I'm planning a trip to China and Japan for late May-Early June. I plan to fly to Hong Kong from Korea, then take a train up to Shanghai, and another train from Shanghai to Beijing. All of that seems pretty doable.

The problem is finding a flight from Beijing to Osaka on June 8th or 9th. I'm not dead set on Osaka as a destination, but I'd like to be in that area to make the most of a 7 day rail pass.

Is there any obvious reason that I'm having so much trouble? I know being one-way makes it harder, but I still thought it would be a pretty easy ticket to find.

Where should I be looking that I may not be?

What should I expect to pay for that flight? The only ones I've found are in the $1000 range.

Thanks in advance

two chinese websites you can try are Elong and Ctrip http://www.elong.net/flights/default2.aspx

you should be able to get a flight on elong for less than 200 dollars.

Wow, thanks!

Those prices are in yuon, right? If so, they are dirt cheap, and it seems like there are lots of flights.

I know I am probably going to sound bossy but if I were you, this would be my itinerary (to save costs):

Flights from Incheon to Beijing (much cheaper than flying to HK if you do it off season)

Beijing to Shanghai (cheap again.. may be 1000 RMB)

Shanghai to Shenzhen (flight c. 1000 RMB or you can train it down for cheaper but longer, fun, though!!)

Shenzhen and TRAIN to Hong Kong (really, really cheap and fast) From Shenzhen, you go through immigration at LO WU and then the train that you take from Lo Wu takes you directly to TST, which takes no more than an hour. (When I visit Hong Kong, I stay in Tai Po, 4 stops from Lo Wu, and from there it takes me 40 minutes to get to TST. So from Lo Wu takes an hour max.)

Then Hong Kong to Osaka.

International flights from HK are generally a little bit cheaper than Mainland China.

You can compare, may be...

Thanks for the advice, but I'm going to stick with my original itinerary. I have a price for a flight from Incheon to Hong Kong that I think is reasonable, and thanks to pugwall, I have a flight from Beijing to Osaka for under $200. I want to be in Beijing for a certain time to meet up with some friends who will be there, so that's why I did it sort of backwards. I'm also going to stick to the trains once I'm in China, because that will give me the freedom to stay an extra day here, leave a day earlier there, depending on how I like the places. I'm also thinking about trying to fit Xian into the schedule.

While I'm posting though, is it normal to have to send a copy of both sides of my credit card and a copy of my passport in order to get my e-ticket? Seems sketchy to me, but maybe I just don't know what the usual procedure is.

How much can I expect to pay for the trains, from Hong Kong(ish) to Shanghai, and from Shanghai to Beijing? And how long will they take?

Sure, if you have a reason for going to Hong Kong first, then by all means Smile

It takes a while to go to Shanghai - 3 nights?

There are many travel agents in Hong Kong.. you can pop in any of those and ask them. They can get tickets etc. sorted out for you, too.

http://www.ctshk.com/english/index.htm

This is the travel agent (government owned) for China. You won't get cheated...

Cot damn. If that's the case I think I'd be better off grabbing a cheap flight from Shenzhen to Shanghai, even if it limits my flexibility a little bit.
