Any of the Home Inn chain of hotels.
I liked the one on the east side of the city next to the #2 ring road. Close enough to the Forbidden Cty, Heibei Park, Temple to Heaven, the silk market, Wanfujing street and some western restaurants (like TGIF) as well as a good selection of local restaurants (at local prices).
It was a bit of a ride out to the summer palace and the great wall but close enough to everything else.
Last year the rates were in the US$25 range including internet hookup (bring your laptop) and breakfast. Front desk staff spoke OK English and there was a supermarket/department store just down the block.

Apartment hotels (2-3 bedroom) run about $80 per night. |

The Sheraton in Beijing is pretty nice. I think it was a 4 star for about $100 a night. Hotels are fairly cheap. You could always stay at a youth hostel for about $12 a night right near tianamen square. |
