Microsoft is now distributing the Vista service pack when you do the routine Windows update.
The problem is, they don't tell you that is what they are doing, at least not until an hour or so into the download.
What they do tell you is you need one important update, 132 mb. But it keeps on coming and coming, taking up more than a gig of your hard drive and cache. If you don't have space open on that drive, you are not going to be able to do the drive and will waste a lot of time.
My guess is you might need 2 gigs open to be safe. And from what the computer mags have been saying, it might take several reboots and more than an hour. |
Old news I'm afraid. Gotta have your wits about you when doing the whole Windows Update thing.
It's still not available for x64 multilanguage yet. |

Right, I just got a 200mb one tonight but it wasn't sp1, although I was wishing it was gonna be.
Well, I just checked that update and it was Microsoft Office Suite Service pack 1 (sp1)...for Office 2007, not windows. |

I manually installed Vista SP1 x64 about 2 weeks ago. Around 730mb. No problems here. |

Windows Update won't give you Vista if you've got any sort of incompatible drivers, language pack, or missing updates.
There's a whole list (can't remember the URL - Google will be your friend) of incompatibilities... I checked, was okay, and still didn't get the Update.
Ended up downloading it myself from MS's website.
No crashing or anything. But if it's really fixed anything, I can't tell... hell, Word 2007 still crashes every time I close a program. |

They aren't "incompatibilities"; the SP needs to have a number of variations for the many different configurations. Unlike XP, Vista can have total language conversions and thus, any installed language packs (outside of the big 5) need to be addressed outside the normal run of things. |

Mine too...so now under system info it says "x64 Vista Ultimate SP1", is that correct?
Well, I'm downloading it now from the MS site. We'll see what happens. Glad I have an image backed up already. |

SP1..Installed, and no problems.
Although, I had to un-install my Korean language pack first, but I guess I can now re-install it now that SP1 is in, or can I? We'll see tonight. |

Is sp1 limited to the 64bit OS at this point? I am running a legit (yea, no kidding) Vista 32bit home premium (came w. the lappy) and haven't gotten sp1 yet via auto update. |

After downloading manually, you will get this warning, provided you click on the box asking for information:
Quote: |
Make sure there is enough free space on your computer's hard disk to install the service pack. The 32-bit SP1 requires a minimum of 7 gigabytes (GB) of free space; the 64-bit SP1 requires a minimum of 13 GB of free space. |
Needless to say, make sure you have deleted old files, emptied the wastebasket, and cleaned up your drive. |

So, you are unning a non-legit version, but the legit SP1 worked and you can still pass Windows update? How was your version passing before? Vista loader?
My version is the Dell OEM one using vista loader. |
