Hello everyone!
Most of us in the West are used to having free speech and I know it's important to who we are, and as a result most of us are all used to talking negatively about things we don't like, including a lot of things that are wrong with our own countries...
But on the other hand, given the social and political climate of the country we are living in, do any of you ever worry that maybe our freely discussed 'culture shock' moments and general frustrations over being here might be feeding racist groups and other anti-foreigner mindsets?
I'm not saying I'm not guilty of whining or complaining... just the opposite, but I'd really hate to think that something I've said here could be used to intensify or even ignite a hatred towards foreigners in the locals. I mean, this site is public domain, and anyone can come here...
Just a thought. |

F them. Hey, Korean netizens, your banks are crap, you had never contributed anything to the world until the West came and showed you how, and confucianism is dead everywhere but here for a reason.
(Having said that, there are many things I like about this country, but again, f those idiots).

Nobody ever seems to understand free speech. There are a lot of things you just can't say, not here and not wherever you come from. You just don't worry about your lack of right not to say them because you probably think they're unacceptable too. On this site we're not allowed to use certain words that people over 60 in our home countries disapprove of (but probably nobody in Korea would be offended by).
This site can and is effectively and accurately used to portray foreigners in a negative light quite often. Let's face it, a lot of other foreigners in this country dislike the low level of discourse on here.
I use parts of it myself sometimes to explain a few things about foreigners to Korea. Earlier this week I was using this site as an example of how fluent English speakers tend to not have a solid grasp of grammar and spelling. I recall using the "definitely/definately" debate in one conversation. |

Although that pisses me off (as does "rediculous"), I'd find different examples to back up your argument. Much more glaring is the your/you're and their/there/they're issues that so many people seem to struggle with. Oh, and to/too... you see that quite often as well. |

My main example is "restaraunt." "Definately" is my second one.
The one that really irks me, which Koreans wouldn't get, is "ya'll." It looks like a contraction of "you will." It should be "y'all." |

We are talked about on this site. Go to google and enter your handle. Many netizens translate and repost some of our writings.
I also don't care. I wrote a pretty offensive post to the netizens after one of the regular foreigner-bashing TV "documentaries" last year. The mods deleted it pretty quickly, though. God forbid someone gets offended. |

Interesting indeed. I wonder how long it takes to translate all that stuff? I also wonder what makes them so interested in what we have to say.
After all, I may be interested in hearing from a foreigner in Canada if I met one in a bar or whatever, but I probably wouldn't go through the effort of translating what they say on a message board. Would any of you guys? |

Wow... I guess I always naively kind of thought of this place as a sort of sanctuary where foreign teachers could bitch and whine and let it out without any consequences.
No matter how I feel about Korea, feeding someone's racism or prejudice really isn't something I'd like to be a part of.
Only positive comments here from me from now on. |

So when a drunk ajossi comes up to you on the subway and yells at you for no reason, you won't tell anyone about that? Instead you'll just speak about how everything and everyone is nice in Korea? |

Interesting, but please bbcode your links so they don't break the page. Also, could anyone tell me what topics they chose to examine? I know I saw a lot of racetraitor in there, but my korean's too poor to really understand what it's about.
P.S.
What do they think of spliff's sense of humor? |
