Anyone ever hear of ECC in Shinchon? I'd love to live in the area but here is the email i received.
The name of the school is ECC.
Time schedule is 3-9/9:50.
The level of students is elementary-middle.
Housing is single.
There are 10 western teachers.
Starting timd is late July.
I've placed 7 western teachers.
It is one of my best customers.
All ECCs have same vacation time-it depends on their own ECC's annual plan.
It won't be the consecutive 5 days for the vacation though, you will have more frequent vacation a year( 1 or 2 days paid vacation would be several times a year)
Anyway, total vacation days would be around 10days.
Sounds like weekends off to me. Anyone have any experience with them? |

Is it the one in Yeonhuidong (right next to Shincon)? I worked there for a few years and overall liked it. It was a good place to work for a new teacher. However, if you already have experience and are in the country, you could probably find a much better job elsewhere. |

i worked for an ECC in Northern Seoul and we never got ANY paid vacation. the vacation was national holidays plus maybe one day before or after but it wasnt paid. Also check to see if its a legit ECC or a franchise. Franchises tend to be run by cowboys who are looking to make as much money as possible but cutting corners and squezing every penny they can out o the staff.
Having said that though the work is very straight forward and all the text books and sylabi will be set out in detail for you. and its a big chain so theres never any problem with getting paid on time. |

Hey, try this link below. I think you will find it VERY useful:
http://forums.eslcafe.com/korea/viewforum.php?f=3
It is called the "Job-related Discussion Forum". Sorry if it was
confusing. That is where people post with "job" related questions.

guess this job is just a step sideways from my wonderland job, possibly even a step down. i politely declined.
and oh yeah, Cohiba, it wasn't a job related question (i don't work there). It was a question about a company. Thanks for your useless comment anyways.

ecc can be a mixed bag. you need to figure out whether it's a franchise or ybm-owned branch. if you were recrutied by danny kim, it's ybm-owned. having worked for two different ybm-owned branches, i can give the scoop on my experiences there.
ecc is full of brand new foreign teachers in their first year of teaching and inexperienced korean teachers who are looking to get a year of solid experience before they can move on to a better teaching gig. the korean teachers tend to be horribly overworked and underappreciated, if not mistreated altogether. you work less hours for a ybm-owned branch (105 last i checked), and the pay used to be lower in turn, but i believe they're becoming more competitive as time goes on. just remember that even at 2,000,000 a month + housing in your first year, which isn't great, you're cleaning up compared to your korean counterparts. they also work much more stenuous hours.
not sure what to tell you about schedules, but i can tell you that i would usually start around 10:00 everyday for kinder ( in an hour early for mandatory prep), and finish around 4:30-5:00. there were breaks along the way, so it was pretty relaxed. i believe most of them cut saturday classes a few years ago, but can't guarantee it. all in all not a bad place to work. i do know plenty of people who have stayed on at different eccs for longer.
i did get paid vacation (determined by head office and never 5 days in a row), i was paid on time, and there was plenty of ovetime available for those interested. good luck! |
