Hi everyone,

I'm planning on a romantic evening with a couple of bottles of wine and some sushi for a change of scene but being a beer drinker I haven't got a clue where to begin.
Can anyone out there recommend a good wine in the 20-30,000 won range? I heard Chilean reds were pretty good? Also is it ok to mix a bottle of white and a bottle of red in the same sitting or should I just stick to one or the other?
Any info. would be appreciated.

Why spend that much? I've had a lot of "expensive" wines, and 9 times out of 10 they're overrated - especially French wines.

That being said, wine is all about personal taste. Do you want something dry, something sweet, or more full-bodied?

My two cents: For under 15 K, Yellowtail (Australian) makes a damn fine Merlot, as well as a good Cabernet and a Shiraz. You'd have a hard time going wrong with a Wolf Blass, too. You can get them at most GS-25s or 7-11s, or try Lotte / Hyundae dept. stores.

Yellowtail reds are pretty solid, personall I like the Black Cat Chilean Carmenere.

Whatever you do, don't buy cheap French wine, it is some of the worst shit in the world.

It's hard to notice the difference between mass market wine like Yellowtail and the fancy shit (at least for me) but it's very easy to notice the difference between good mass market wine and shitty mass market wine (like cheap French wine and any Korean wine).

Solid advice so far. Avoid cheap wine from traditional wine countries (like France). New world countries offer good quality wine at reasonable prices (like Wolf Blass; Yellow Tail). Unless you know a fair bit about wine, there's no reason why u should pay more than 20,000 for a bottle.

This is double posted in the General Discussion forum, but let me repeat the advice seen there...

Don't drink red wine with sushi. Yuck. Find some sake instead.

Very true, I forgot they were going to eat sushi. As a general rule, full-bodied reds go with steaks; light or creamy whites go with chicken/fish; and sweet reds are a good dessert wine.
