This morning at breakfast I was warming up my cereal in the microwave, suddenly there were loud strange grinding noises. So I quickly turned it off.

There was an industrial burning smell, no smoke was coming out, so it must have occurred internally.

I told my co-teacher about it and she asked if I was sure I'd put in the right kind of dish. I didn't say it but I was going to say 'we have microwaves in England too you know'. I explained to her I used the right kind of dish, and the microwave has worked well ever since I received it in May 2007.

I explained it is dangerous to use. She called admin. and the woman there was away on a business trip and will return on Monday.

I told my co-teacher I'm going to buy another one this afternoon, because I need it. She said she'd find out what to do with the old one from admin. on Monday. We didn't discuss if they'll provide a new one.

It was a Daewoo microwave. This is a sad loss, because I'll have to fork out some of my own cash for a new one Laughing

I could wait until Monday, but even if they don't reimburse me or provide a new one, at least I'll have my own, which will be handy if I move schools.

YOU are responsible for maintaining and fixing things in your apartment - check your contract.

Impossible. Try it again. It's fine, must have been your imagination.*

"Everyone knows Korea makes the best microwaves in the world."

A Korean actually said this to me. A Korean who has never been out of Korea. A Korean who has probably never owned/used/touched a microwave that was not made in Korea. I,too, kept my mouth shut and didn't tell him how microwaves are 1/2 to 1/3 the price they are here.

*Just have a fire extinguisher handy. Too bad the one for the apt. floor has been missing for months.

If I were to get a new one, I think I would just get an analog model with twist knobs. As far as I, or my co-teachers, can tell, there is no power adjustment on my digital model. All the different buttons do is change the time settings in a semi-unpredictable way.

The microwave was delivered to me through the school. It's one of the listed items in the contract, I suspect it is the schools responsibility because I don't own the item.

I don't want to throw it out and then be told I have to pay for disposing of something that's not even mine.

Anyway, I will get a standard microwave, not the cheapest, but close.

It's your responsibility.

Check your contract.

You are responsible for maintenance of the things in your apartment.

Cereal in the microwave? Does cereal mean something different in the UK?

As above.

But if YOU had a good relationship with your school they'd probably have no problem sorting out a new or second hand one for you.

IF you're a pain in the ass and act as such then I doubt they'll give a sh..............

Does that mean I can chuck it out? I hope so, it'll take up space.

Cereal means: frosties (Tony the tiger on the packet) in milk in a cereal bowl. A bowl shaped object made of the same material as plates.

You'll have to pay for it before you leave read your contract.

You never should've told them you broke it.

I didn't break it, it broke itself!

I've bought a new one, 68,000 won, very basic.

Depending on what the admin. centre say, if I have to bring the microwave into school, and they fix it, that would be good but very unlikely.

If I have to pay for it, I'll live and learn. I was under the impression before the end of a contract they check your house and the appliances they provided, that's why I told them. Oh well.
