I just learned from a friend that his school has adopted a policy of not allowing anyone to renew a contract after 3 years.

Has anyone else come across this? Is it common?

Is it a university or conversation school?

Never heard of a renewal cap for conversation schools.

However, Japanese universities commonly do this with teachers - 2 or 3 renewals max before being let go.

Yes, have met some teachers who claim they were capped because they came upon the 5 year mark...as Korean law (I think) would be a thorn in their side for us....

I am on for my 6th year ( I think, haven't been told to leave yet) at the same school. It depends on a lot of factors. Each school will be different.

My friend is at a university cum hakwon. Uni kids during the semester, kiddies during break.

I just wondered if this is a part of the tendency to exclude foreigners...don't want to encourage anyone to stay toooooo long. Keeps the salary down, too.

Foreign professors do most of the heavy lifting in terms of course loads, devoting themselves almost exclusively to teaching. Nevertheless, foreign professors tend to be treated as hired hands, without academic standing, and lacking the possibility of career advancement or tenure. They must submit to yearly contracts (compensated at a rate only 60 percent of their Korean peers) while walled off from the permanent Korean faculty who benefit from travel, research funding, sabbaticals, etc. Moreover, when hundreds of Korean scholars enjoy such perks at American and other foreign universities, something is obviously amiss.

According to the Samsung Group's chairman, Lee Kun-hee, to succeed globally, Korea must forgo the thought that Korea and being Korean is superior, and foreign specialists must be treated with respect.
