Got a few stories, but maybe others have too. I've been disappointed a few times. A lot of people just suck.

As Mark Twain ( I believe, could be Will Rogers) said "The more people I meet, the more I like my dog". I concur. I'm fifty, served my country 8 years (U.S.) and I'm amazed at the idiots who post here. I have the luxury of looking back to when I was 25. I recall thinking I was incredibly intelligent, ready for the C.E.O. gig. Know what? I was dumb as a stump! I've heard of this word, "wisdom". Could it actually exist? Am I twice as smart at 50 as I was at 25? Is there a substitute for experience? I wish you "younguns" could look forward and see yourself at 50. Do you think you would change anything? Anything? Here it is: Rule#1- Get over yourself Rule #2 Get God Rule #3 Get good. Any questions?

I've only had four guys I ever considered friends without quotation marks, two of whom let me down eventually, one of whom I let down big time:

My best friend from Grade 5 to Grade 12 I suddenly ignored halfway through Grade 12 when I started spending all my free time with my highschool sweetheart. This continued into summer holidays and college. It was like I suddenly didn't have time for my best bud, I making just token effort infrequently. The kicker was when he sent me an invitation to his wedding and I neither went nor even replied to the invite, not out of anger, but simply because I was so "busy" I put it off and put it off, until the date had come and gone. He must think I really SUCK. And I have spent at least the last decade kicking myself for being so inconsiderate about a long time true friend I had had.

Koreans are awful friends, IMHO. They are always promising to help, but when you call them to actually go down to the XXX office to help, I am invariably let down. Gyopos that I'm not even good friends with are much more willing to help me in a bind. Korean Koreans, forget it. And if Korean Koreans DO help you, they're always bringing it up, how you now 'owe' them. Just my experience.

in contrast to the above poster, my korean and japanese friends are some of the best friends i've ever had. that's part of the reason i'm teaching overseas -- i'm not ready to say bye to them yet (i met them at uni in australia). there are a few flakes here and there, but as far as my "inner circle" goes, i've been extremely fortunate.

when it comes to friendships, you rarely get what you give. but when you find good ones, appreciate em, but be ready to say goodbye. shit happens.

Suck it up man, look out for yourself. True friendships with natives and waygooks over here are hard to come by but worth investing time in.

I have been blessed with either luck or great judgement of character and have thus never had a bad friend. I have no sympathy.
