Perth Australia, gold coast, ... northern New Zealand.
Anywhere in SE asia will be subject to the monsoons. You have a 50/50 chance of getting rained on pretty heavily. The same will hold true for most places in in the inter-tropical convergence zone.
Anywhere north of the monsoons won't be a hut on the beach (cabin - perhaps).
Winter in Northern Australia or NZ might fight what you are looking for (but subject to the end of the cyclone season).
The equinoxes are the best time for travel and good weather.
Having said all that, the mid Philippines is usually still OK in July (Visayas region). Truk, Palau, Micronesia, are all excellent choices for beaches, huts and diving. I first dove Palau back in '81 and it is still my favorite dive location (after many repeated trips and many, many dives elsewhere). |

Sounds good. Thanks. I've wanted to go there for quite a while actually.
Looking for more rustic accommodation, rather than resort style. Do you have any links to accommodation/specific places? |

Been to Thailand ten times. The only time I saw a hut on the beach was in the Lost flashback of Jack |

Ko Chang had them on/near Lonely Beach - right on the main walkway at the beach for people. Not exactly private or secure.
I much prefer an airconditioned bungalow on the beach. |

Aren't tourists being murdered in droves around those areas? |

Book a hotel for your night of arrival and take a walk down the beach (around the lagoon) to find one that suits your taste without the pressure of your suitcase around your neck.
Lots of them do not have websites or even an on-line listing.

Kish Island - Iran.
It is a resort island, overlooking the Persian Gulf
Wonderful relaxing place, untouched by western tourists. Plenty of diving opportunities. |

Bayou Lafourche, Louisiana. Not too much chance of rain. Lots of huts on shores. Interesting underwater ecosystems.
Paradise, right? |

July is a good time to visit the Gulf of Thailand, especially Koh Phangan or Tao....strange monsoon pattern which avoids the July rains.
But, if you'd like a change from Thailand, then absolutely Indonesia. There are some groovy spots in Sumatra, Nais Islands, Lake Toba or Bukketingi. I'd recommend North Sumatra for a 14 day trip....Berastagi is a great hiking spot with three or four large volcanoes within walking distance. After a few days of hiking, check out Lake Toba....lots of cheap options right on the lake....great fun and lots to do. |
