I am currently looking for a job in Korea, and one of my good friends asked me to be her maid of honor next year. Has anyone ever been able to get time off in their contracts? Or am I better off signing a contract until the time of the wedding and then coming back to start a new contract?

You probably won't be able to get time off.

It all depends on where you work.

If you work in a public school, you could get "sick", which would give you a few days off. Otherwise, forget about it.

If you work in a hagwon, then it depends on your contract. Some places have set vacation dates for everyone, others give you the freedom to choose when to take your vacation. The latter would allow you to go, but you need to check your contract to know if it's the case.

And you may not be able to start a new contract right away...

Thank you all so much for your quick replies! I didn't expect them so fast. I guess this is going to be a little more complicated than I hoped it would be...

What I would suggest is being up front with employers and see if you can negotiate for some unpaid leave for the time that you need off for the wedding and include that in the contract upfront.

To me it would be important to get agreement to that in writing and one easy way to do that would be in the contract. And I gather that it is important enough to you to ba able to go that you wouldn't really mind if it was not paid leave.

You may find some employers who wouldn't consider it but I have heard of people both in hagwons and in public schools have been able to negotiate things like that upfront ... and it seems to have been easier for them when they have done it before they started ... rather than trying to negotiate for it after they have started.

It will definitely be worth giving that a try ...

Either negotiate it up front as a contract provision, or put off coming to K-land until after the fact.

Do not accept a 'verbal' agreement.

alot of my co workers have had absolutely no trouble getting time off for important events, a couple took weeks off for weddings, one had a boyfriend come visit, and another a personal problem....

some had it in contracts, for others the boss was kind...

it depends on your school and how flexible they are. don't take the above no's as bible, ask for it to go into your contract and see what happens. theres a shortage of teachers at the moment, my guess is they will give it you.

Do you know the specific date when your friend will get married? With some jobs it would be pretty easy to arrange for time off at some parts of the year, and very difficult at others.

Listen to the cruising monkey. Last summer I worked getting August off into my contract renewal.

It's not the same situation as you, but I think that any boss not willing to let you fly home for a week with months of warning given to them is not a boss you want to work for.

Sure, get sick for a week, leave the country, and be compleltly uncontactable for a week...that's gonna go down well.

Get the dates for the wedding and try and negiotate something prior to signing your contract. If you are working in a PS and the wedding is during the school vacation (i.e late-July -late Aug or Late Dec-early feb), you should be able to get that time off without a problem. If it happens to be at another time of the year...it will be more difficult but not impossible.

I was in the same situation you are in now. My brother was getting married in October but I was planning to come to Korea in March. I was up-front with my employer and told them that I needed to take off certain days for a family event. I was asked by the Assistant Director what I would do if the Director said no. I responded, "Go anyways, and find a new job when I get back." Sure enough, the Director let me take the time off that I needed (I think it was 4 days total off of work).

I'll echo the advice from before: Be upfront about it and get it in writing.

cheers.

Perhaps I'm just a cold person, but if one of my friends were getting married, I wouldn't want to shell out $1,500 or so just to fly out for a few days for a wedding. But I'm a guy.

Honestly, you probably will have a hard time getting that off.

I was in the same position except I have been asked to be a best man... Realising this would clash with me working away they have delayed the wedding till after I get back...

But like the above say, be upfront and if it works out great... if not oh well there is always other jobs that will let you.

But get it in writing.

not only that, but to the OP...don't accept a job in a foreign country with the idea that you need to break off halfway and come back for, of all things, a wedding. That's the kind of attitude that leads to broken contracts.

if the wedding is so important then get a short-term job where you are until the wedding, THEN pull up your roots and come here.
