Hello All,
I've been searching for a teaching position in Asia. South Korea has the best benefits, salary, accomodations, etc. I'm a native speaker of English but my problem is I'm Asian. People who have taught there have warned me about sexual harrassment, ridicule, embarrassment, etc. because 1) I'm a woman 2) I'm Asian. Any advice?
Thanks!! |

I wouldn't worry so much.
I think however the main problem is that you might have a hard time getting a job. Koreans want white faces for their schools.
That's not to say jobs do not exist out there...just hard to come by. |

If you're Korean, there's definitely a niche market for that. Look for information about gyopos on this very same message board.
If you're from another Asian country, the thing to note is where you earned your degree. Was it a country well-known for English speaking? Countries like Canada, Britain, Australia, New Zealand, and the U.S. are the common countries, but plenty of Irish and even some Scottish slip in here as well. |

The woman who taught at my school before me was a Korean-American, and she was adored at my school. If I had fifty won for every time I've heard "Oh, remember Previous Teacher? She was wonderful," I could move to Fiji.
Of course, they might just be nostalgic because I'm rubbish. But it is possible to be successful and respected as an Asian native speaker. |

Just curious, why restart a thread thats laid dormant for 5 years? You must have actually had to search it out. Is there some reasoning for this apparent madness? |

Perhaps Bibbitybop is just a really nice person who wants to provide helpful info. Nothing wrong with that. |

I was looking for something else and saw this thread. I thought maybe after 5 years the OP was still on the fence about Korea.
I don't have a tendency to restart old-ass threads, it was a spontaneous act of kindness. |
